Ill be going to the gravel quarry on Thursday night. The directions are at the bottom of this email. The weather has finally started to bake out the moisture ground moisture. Looking at weather station overnight histories: Argonite shows no dewfall at all and RH stays below 50% all night and the temperature is in the 50s all night. This is near the Lake Side site on the SLAS star party maps but it is at least a thousand feet higher in elevation. Lake Side and itself can be 20 degrees cooler and still have a heavy dewfall this late in the year. Pony Express weather station is out near the Rush Valley observing site. It shows humidity hitting 100% about midnight. Not good with an early moon rise. Burns weather station is north of Heber City at about the same elevation as the Gravel Quarry. Weather there stayed dry all night and the wind was only 5 mph gusting to 10 mph. The last quarter moon isnt until this weekend but the moons low declination makes it rise late. Thursday doesnt have a moonrise according to the USNO because it rises at 11:30 pm on Wednesday night and 12:30 am on Friday morning. Astronomical Twilight will be at 11:00 pm Thursday so there is ninety minutes of good dark before the moon rises. Thats good enough for me to make the short run to Gravel Quarry. Directions to Gravel Quarry: Take I 80 eastbound until you reach US 40 and turn south. take the Park City/Kamas Exit 4. At the bottom of the exit ramp, go East (left) towards Kamas. Take this road for 1.6 miles to the Peoa - Oakley turn-off. This turn-off will be on your left. You know you are approaching it because there are several "Deer-Crossing Ahead" signs. Since the Deer Crossing is at the turn off, the distances on the signs are also the distances to the turn-off. This is Browns Canyon, but the sign says Peoa - Oakley. Take this road for 4.2 miles, to the Park City Harper Gravel Pit road and sign on the left. (About 1000 feet before you get to the gravel pit road, there will be an orange sign on the right that says "truck entrance ahead".) At the gravel pit sign, turn in. Watch out for the speed bump at the entrance! Go about one and a half miles up this road. There is a "mobile home" weighing office off to the left. Just after the office there is a parking area (for the office), which is where we set up. Park towards the far side of the parking area, so that your vehicles are not blocking scopes that are set up to view towards the South and East, which is where the best skies are. --------------------------------- Discover Yahoo!
