Checking my planetarium program Starry Night Pro 6, I find that > Saturday night at 11:59 p.m., Comet PANSTARRS (C/2017 T2), will be at 33.9 degrees altitude to the WNW. It’s below and to the right of Arcturus, which is at 39.7 degrees altitude. PANSTARRS is about as far to the right of Arcturus as it is below it, around 6 degrees. > Sent from my iPhone

So Long and Thanks for All the Fish

Effective immediately, I am stepping-down as co-admin here on Utah-astronomy. It's not any amount of work at all, but I'm trying to get offline as much as possible, with no tethers. Some of you know that I've been on staff at Cloudy Nights for the last 8 years, almost 6 of them as an administrator. I left that job last month for the same reason, I just need to spend more time with my dear wife. I will still respond to emails but won't have much of an online presence. Look for my classified ads on CN, as I'm still selling-off a lifetime accumulation of astronomy stuff. Retirement is getting closer and we plan on moving to a smaller, single-level home at that time. Too many stairs here. There won't be room for all that stuff! Please continue to support my good friend Rich Tenney as the now sole Administrator for Utah-Astronomy. Thanks Rich, and thanks everyone. I hope to see all of you in person when this crazy pandemic has run its course and life can get somewhere close to normal again. Now it looks like I'll finally have a Friday night with no clouds, for the first time in weeks- and of course it's the shortest night of the year, lol. Stay safe! -Chuck

Bryce Canyon stargazing

With the crowds nonexistent and the weather getting better next week I may head to Bryce Canyon National park. I was thinking of setting up at Bryce Point, it's been a long time but the stars looked really good up there about 18 years ago. If I set up there, will that be a problem with the NPS? Motels are cheap and with the heat returning it sounds like a good idea to go up there. Anyone thinking of the same thing. May take the bicycle as well.

Omega Centauri

I went out to the desert community of Kayenta last night with my 15 X 70 binoculars. We spotted Omega Centauri in the low southwest sky. We were amazed at how bright it is even at the low altitude. My buddy Ken took some pictures of it with his new ZWO camera. He couldn't stack them cause of problems with the low altitude. I will probably go out there tonight with my telescope and try to view it at 11pm. Night should be cool but not cold tonight. Amateur astronomy is alive and well in Southern Utah. Debbie
