Space Weather News for June 10, 2013 http://spaceweather.com METEOR SHOWER: Sky watchers in North America might see an outburst of meteors during the early hours of June 11th when Earth passes through a stream of cometary debris last seen in 1930. Forecasters predict the return of the gamma Delphinid meteor shower this Tuesday morning around 08:30 UT (04:30 am EDT). Dr. Kieda Appointment

I thought some of you would be interested in the latest on Dr.Kieda: It is a pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. David Kieda as the Dean of the Graduate School effective August 1, 2013. Dr. Kieda is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the U and an internationally known researcher on the use of astronomical telescopes and observations to study the fundamental particles and forces in the universe. Originally a native of Endicott, New York, Professor Kieda received his undergraduate degree from MIT in Physics in 1982. He joined the University of Utah faculty in 1990, shortly after completing his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Pennsylvania. In his role as Chair of Physics and Astronomy, Professor Kieda has worked closely with faculty and administration to establish and expand the University's Astronomy program. He helped set up both a public observatory on campus and a high-altitude, research telescope in southern Utah. He also established the University as a major partner in international research programs, including the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Professor Kieda currently leads multiple major gamma-ray observatory projects and is the founder and organizer of the yearly SnowPAC conference series on particle astrophysics, astronomy, and cosmology, and is a fellow of the American Physical Society. He also has 30 patents on novel material properties, electronic components, and safer medical devices. Professor Kieda is recipient of the 2012 Utah Governors Medal of Science and Technology as well as the University's 2013 Distinguished Scholarly and Creative Research award. Congratulations to Dr. Keida.

Join me in doing the Planetary Nebula Astro League List imager or visual

I've decided to add something to my lists in terms of observing. The Herschel 400 II that I am doing doesn't really have a lot of summer time items. Enough to work for four days of observing (including sketching them). So to add to that I am going to do the Astro League's Planetary Nebula List. Imagers and Visual Observers can do this list. I intend to sketch each of them as next to galaxies, PN's are my favorite deep sky objects. I have the list form the Astro League in an Excel Spreadsheet with filters on it so if you want it, let me know and I'll either upload it to Google Docs or email it to you. There are LOTS of summer time PN's to hunt down. It should make for a fun comparison for those who image them and my sketches so I hope an imager takes me up as there aren't too many sketchers here in Utah. Anyone want to join me in doing it? Per above I'd like to recruit an imager and then on my blog compare the image they take to the sketch I do.
