To everyone on this list: My employer is shutting down for two weeks, and I have been laid-off. Temporarily, I hope, but I must look for employment elsewhere just in case. Many of you know that Companion has been on the skids for some time. We have many contracts waiting to be signed, but the recession, combined with the tragedy of Sept. 11th has delayed many of our customers intended programs, to our detriment. The big tube for SPOC-2 is being completed today, and it will not be affected at all by this shut-down. I must unsubscribe for a while, and while you can still reach me at chuckhards(a)yahoo.com , I have cancelled ISP service at home as part of an ecconomizing strategy. I will only be checking that account once or twice a week. I would appreciate it if someone would notify me when the swap-meet is scheduled; many of you have my phone number. Thanks to all of you for your friendship, fellowship, advice, critiques, and compliments. I will miss this forum, but hopefully will see you all under the stars soon. Thanks Chuck, I wish I could claim credit, but it was a big group effort! Lots of people put the material together, with Martin Van Hemert providing the picture, and Don Fulton turning the whole thing into a cohesive add, with the right format, and getting it off to the reflector in time. By the way Chuck, if you have a home computer and a modem, there are 2 companies out there that you might want to look at. Juno gives you a free e-mail account, and access to it, if you are willing to put up with obnoxious ads. My mother uses it, and it works well. The other is Netzero, which has limited free access to the internet, at the cost of seeing on-line ads. If you have a computer, but no modem, let us know and we'll see what we can find :). The other option may be a yahoo account, accessed at the library.... Thanks to all of you for your good wishes. There is still a ray of hope that Companion will survive, we've been right to the wire before and managed to pull back from the brink. We have several large contracts that are all but signed; for some reason most clients have delayed their programs from their original dates (Sept. 11 & recession, no doubt) and that has spoiled our plans for the first quarter of this year. When I started with this company, there were only 20 employees. Over the years, we reached almost 300 at our peak in the mid-nineties, now down below 100 again. If we have to, we'll downsize again, and I can hope that I will be valued enough to be retained. Good luck to Cynthia as well. Cyn, I hope things work out in your favor also. I tell myself that it's only a job, jobs come and go. That which doesn't kill us only makes us stronger! I'll still be checking this email account through the end of next week. Chuck

Laid off

This seems to be going around. My company is shutting down for two weeks, beginning March 8th. If sufficient orders are not received in that time, I will be looking for a new job. I have permission to use the property to finish the big tube for SPOC regardless of what happens. I may have to unsubscribe from the list at the end of next week. That's life! Chuck

Dark-sky site

How about Great Basin Nat'l Park (or is it a state park?) It's very dark there. One of the darkest areas in the country, judging from those "USA at Night" satellite images. C.

Brent had mentioned East Canyon too. Isn't there going to be light polution from the SLC valley there? And is there any land to buy? On the other hand it might be lots closer to folks in the SL area.

The sky has looked pretty black up at East Canyon the last few years when we have done a Star Party for them.
