Parallelograms for sale

I have 4 parallelogram assemblies for sale. The assembly consists of the arms, yokes, and my "Lakeside" pivot assembly, allowing over 180-degrees of pan, right at the binocular. No need to walk around the tripod to pan. Can be used in "sidesaddle" (either side) configuration, straight, or anywhere in-between. They do not come with a tripod, counterweights, or "L" bracket. These are the wood versions of my aluminum prototype. Rich Tenney and Glen Warchol each have one fully mounted, and hopefully they will have them at Binopalooza next Thursday. I can coach you through attaching the assembly to a tripod and counterweighting it, or perform the work for you at additional cost. Glen and Rich each provided their own tripods. Tripods used on cheap Chinese alt-az refractors are perfect for this mount. There are a couple of counterweighting options, from dumbell weights, to the hanging water jug advocated by DeLoy Pierce and others. I am asking $30 each for the parallelogram assembly, already assembled. First come, first served. I do not plan on making any more for several months. I cannot send images due to the limitations of my AOL browser at home. More sun-viewing advice

If the scope or binocular you plan to observe the sun with is such that your face is also turned toward the sun, or within 90-degrees of it, cut out a round shade from cardboard, and slip it over the tube of the telescope, or cut two holes in the case of a binocular, and slip it over the front of the binos. Your face will then be in shade as you look through the eyepiece(s). Make the shade large enough to shadow your entire face and head, and then a little more. On binoculars, you can cut a little window in the upper portion, and tape some Mylar over it. Then you can get the naked-eye view just before and after the magnified view. Fossil beds at Lakeside

A fellow at work told me that he was at a vast fossilized coral bed near Lakeside yesterday. Brought back some nice specimens. Anybody else familiar with this site? parallelogram & digital camera blues

Rich Tenney got an advance peek at my new parallelogram, and it's all-wood version, still under construction. Photos should go to Patrick soon. Rich, thanks for stopping by and checking things out. My AOL browser won't support the javascript attachment software on the Yahoo page! The camera software and my Kodak imaging program won't allow me to alter the size of the file, so I can only get one image on a diskette...things are getting ridiculous... I'll download the images directly from the camera to my office computer, which is much more aptly enabled than my home machine. I'll then try and get them to Patrick from there. Sorry, borrowed camera... One neat thing about it, though, was that it can be used in the afocal mode...I snapped a foto of the sun through my 50mm f/9 refractor, with Baader material, hand-held camera. Sunspots are clearly seen. The digital zoom got a bit chunky at extreme magnification, as resolution was reduced quite a bit. Better to use optical zoom by switching to a shorter f.l. eyepiece, or using a Barlow. Those of you with digital cameras may want to try this simple technique on the eclipse next Monday. It now looks positive that I'll have both mounts up and running at binopalooza. Rich is donating a tripod for the wood prototype, a clone of the one I used for the aluminum version. These tripods came from garage-sale small alt-az refractors. I retained the central pivot bearing, and they are perfect for mounting a parallelogram. Utah Skies & Alcon 2002

I was looking at a very nice website called Utah Skies last night which, for reasons unknown, I had never come across before. However, when I sent an e-mail to the "contact us" address, it bounced back as undeliverable. Anyone on this group know how to get in touch with them? (info@.. was the address that did not work.). And a reminder to any of you that are planning to register for Alcon 2002, that the registration fee goes up after Monday, so get those forms in the mail before then. For those of you who are not planning to attend, I urge you to take another look at our website, www.alcon2002.org and make sure you know what you are missing before you pass it up. I'd hate to have anyone feel that they would have gone, if they had only known that it was going to be that good.... By the way, if past conference registration patterns hold true, this one is definitely going to be one of the best attended ones ever. Jo

Telescope Pier

I apologize for the sales posting, but my membership in SLAS has expired (it seems to do so on a yearly basis!) and I can't post this on the classifieds. I just kicked an old pier once too many times. I will not use it for a long time to come, and it is just in the way. So, I'm putting it up for sale. It is a 6X6 steel tube, 88-1/2 inches high with a 1/2 " steel platform welded to the top. The platform measures 9" X 14". I had my refractor on it many years ago, and it is very stable. Ready to be planted! Please email me off list if you are interested. I'm thinking $75 but please give me your offers. I will pay my membership up at the first opportunity. #14 vs #12 welding glass

This list always provides the best advice; After purchasing the #12 lense, I made a couple of phone calls and found a place that had #14s and for $1.50 apiece I bought 3 and framed them individually in some cardboard. By the time I tested them on the naked eye sunspot, it was up at about the 10:00 position on the disk. Bring on the eclipse!
