It looks like the shuttle was turned quite a bit while it was flying. One question I have is, would the shuttle have appeared that big inside the plasma or is the shuttle the little bright thing just ahead of it? What magnification was used for the picture? As I was watching through 10X 50mm binos, I thougt I was seeing the shuttle as well. Then I saw pictures later that made me wonder. Weekend whether

I just checked with the Dugway whether (MET) and they report that there is a high pressure over the whole state. Record highs are predicted for St. George; high 80s to low 90s. Debbie, crank up the air conditioner. The rest of the state will also be experiencing unseasonably worm temps. There may be some occasional high serous clouds, but they should dissipate after dark. SPOC skies

SPOC is probably the best site within a 1/2 hr. drive of the center of the S.L. valley. Little Mountain has deteriorated considerably in the last 20 years, and the summit isn't even accessible anymore. Big Mountain is about the same. I've done MM's at SPOC decades ago, the only problem is the high eastern horizon if you plan to take it to the bitter end. But all things considered it's not a bad site at all, and it does get darker after midnight. Restrooms/porta potties are always a good trade for just a bit of light pollution. Last of the moon

At 5:30 this morning while passing through Cedar Fort I caught a slender section of an orange moon just rising over the mountains with the eastern sky beginning to brighten. At 6:25 when I dropped my wife off at her work area on Dugway Proving Ground the moon was a good 15 degrees or more above the horizon, a beautiful light yellow color in a sea of baby blue. By the time I got to my work area at 6:45 the sky had brightened and the slender section of the once striking moon had faded in contrast with the morning dawn. Messier Marathon Friday & Saturday

SLAS is having its annual Messier Marathon at SPOC this coming Friday and Saturday nights. We'll be using the Ealing for the marathon. The refractor is not the best for deep sky (it's a 200 mm f/16.8) so we'll probably use it for the planets If you have never seen Jupiter and Saturn (especially Saturn) through a largish refractor this is your chance. This is not a public event but members of other clubs are welcome to attend. Lots of room on the grounds around the observatory for portable scopes. Patrick

Meade ETX-125 case for sale

The tuition bill just came, time to sell something! :) I have a Meade #775 Hard Carry Case, for the ETX-125 Telescope. This case is fully lined with fitted foam inserts and accepts the complete ETX telescope, plus optional accessories. It has locking latches, with 2 keys. This case is strong enough to carry your ETX-125 as check-in luggage on airlines. It retails for $145.00 plus shipping. I am hoping to sell it locally, and avoid shipping. In very good condition. It has a small dent on one corner, and otherwise is in new condition. If you are interested, I would be happy to e-mail or post pictures of the case, and the dent. I am asking $100.00 for it.
