Deep Impact questions for Patrick

Hi Patrick, couple of questions to clarify the timing: Impact is at 7:52 UT according to the ESA Website. I'm assuming that is actually the time that the visible wavefront hits earth, and not the actual impact time? Visible impact would then be at approx. 11:52 pm MDT? This event will be fairly low, have you scouted the northwestern horizon from SPOC to make sure it won't be behind any trees? I have a portable projection screen that will certainly be more reflective than a wall, would you like me to bring it? I plan on attending the "Wallop Watch". Thanks again, see you at Crunch Time. This week-end Observing

I'm planning on Friday at the Gravel Quarry like a lot of other people, I was saving Wolf Creek for next week-end if anyone's up for it then, the 10th and 11th. I may not get out Saturday night due to some other commitments and was thinking of the Gravel Quarry again on Sunday night if any one is interested in joining for another night out. The weather finally looks good and I hate to miss a good weather week-end evening, we've had so few this year, and last year for that matter. Bob Taylor

Does anyone know what it's like down at the Wedge these days? I've always heard that it's miserable with the insects this time of year, but I wondered if the unusually cooler temperatures would improve it, and make it worthwile for observing next week. Mike

Congratulations, Patrick, on being recognized by Bryce Canyon National Park for your VERY long service to the star-gazing public there. Science and astronomy podcasts in iTunes

The newest version of iTunes has added support for so-called podcasts. For those that don't know, a podcast is an audio file that can be downloaded and played back on a computer or an iPod. This audio format has been available for a while, but has required a fair amount of work on the part of the recipient. Apple has now built that all into iTunes so it's a lot easier to do. The iTunes programs runs on either PCs or Macs, so we can avoid computo-religious wars. In almost all cases, the podcasts are free. You "subscribe" to the podcast and your computer automatically receives new programs as they become available. The audio format is compressed, so those folks with modems might be able to receive them without too much bother. Anyway, I installed the new version last night and went looking around to see what I could find. It turns out there are quite a few astronomy shows and even more on general science topics. For example, the NPR show "Science Friday" is there. The audio quality is quite good. Sure beats talk radio--although you can get that too, if you need a certain daily dose of invective. So there it is. Pretty cool.
