Oh, these are all great points. Siegfried is picking up on my aperture fever, and the 12" and 10" solutions have their own appeal. The 12" truss Dob loaner that I have been using takes 20 min to set up and collimate, if I am lucky on the collimation. But the 8" solid tube Dob loaner that I first got from SLAS took 5 minutes to set up and was easy to use on nights when I had insomnia and the sky was clear.... Part of me says I should get an 8" solid tube Dob for cheap somewhere and *then* think about a larger scope, and part of me says that I have been using a 12" and need to move up. I'll take a look at pricing on the 10", Daniel and Joe, that is really good feedback. ...oh, and my husband says it needs to fit in our car along with our camping gear. I priced out the 15" ultracompact Obsession with everything on it, and it was just under $11K new. That's pretty steep. So I think it is a good reference figure. I still want a 36" telescope that fits in my purse.... Marlene

in the market for a telescope

I am now thinking of purchasing my first telescope, after using the SLAS 12" Orion reflector, Dobsonian base, for awhile. Of course I want the largest aperture that I can afford and lift in and out of my RAV4. I know the sky well enough that I don't need go-to and am not currently doing astrophotography. So I would happily buy a manual telescope now if the price was right. I see that Chuck sold two this week, but I saw the email too late, so this note is to be proactive and let you know I am looking, in case someone else has a working telescope that is just taking up space. So...about lifting...my back is not great and I am not confident about lifting more than 40 pounds. What do others do? Obsession's telescopes come with wheelbarrow set-ups, but they are pricey, too. If I buy a manual 15" Obsession now and add go-to later, I will have spent over $10K when the go-to, paracorr and all that jazz are added in. What is your advice? Today I marked down a couple of 2-inch Orion Deep View eyepieces we're clearing out at the Clark Planetarium. There's only one of each, at 50 percent off, so first-come, first-served. They are; 28mm, regularly priced at $77.95, now $38.98. 42mm, regularly priced at $82.95, now $34.01. Note; we will be closing the day after Labor Day and won't reopen until at least the 16th! 22-Inch Dob for sale

I am selling Brent's old 22-inch (f/6-ish) Dob for the giveaway price of $200. This is a huge, classic Dob, you will need a flatbed trailer to take it home. Mirror made by Brent Watson under the personal supervision of John Dobson. Comes with a free ten-foot stepladder. I've been keeping it under an RV tarp on my patio with the mirrors removed. Comes with wheeled dolly made by either Brent or Wayne Sumner. You'll never get another chance at a scope this huge for such little money. I'd like to move it on in the next few days, while I'm off work (a rarity these days). Thanks!
