Gang, I've been asked to put on a star party for the YMCA Camp Roger. Kinda short notice, but if anyone's available for Monday night (the 1st), I'd appreciate it. This is the one that was rained out last week. They have a large open field that we can setup in. They will allow us to drive onto the field to setup as well. I'm not sure about power, don't count on it. There will be about 30-40 kids at the camp that night, they will provide enough counselors to keep the kids coming in waves. I think if we could have somewhere around 3-4 scopes that'd be plenty. It'll be quite dark, there's really nothing around, although they have a restricted view until about 20-30 degrees up in most directions. Plan on starting around 9:30, I'll be getting there somewhere around 8-8:30 so I can setup while it's still light. Plan on about an hour from entering Parley's canyon. Hi Ed, I didn't know anything was displayed at the Grand America. To answer your questions, sometimes thetmy were made fir special occasions -- George Fishley's was made when he word his Continental hat in a Fourth of July celebration, etc. -- but mostly they were just like anyone else who was photographed. Hey you ATMers (that makes this post on topic <g> ) and anyone else who might be interested: A friend has a gas powered air compressor that is old and a pain in the next to start. Such a pain that he was going to throw it out and get a new one. But I asked if I might have it and see if I can find any mechanically minded person that might want it. He said "fine". Mon nite

I accompanied Dan to Camp Rodgers (above Kamas) where we conducted a star party for some 60+ kids and a dozen + staff members. Was pretty cloudy as we arrived, but the clouds thinned and we were able to do a pretty good job for them. Dan kept his 'scope on the Ring, and I was on Saturn for the most part. Did get a nice wide field view of M-29 plus Alberio. Was dark enough to see the Milky Way, but it was pretty faint to an untrained eye. Packed up at 2130 and dodged deer all the way into Kamas. Saw a nice 2-point on the way up, horns still heavy with velvet. All in all, a very good night. 73

The machine shop was gorgeous - everything a machinist (amateu r or professional) could want. He must have done some truly impressive work. We watch the news and tsk tsk over the fires and loss of homes, far removed from the tragedy, until it touches someone we can connect with, however distant. Amazing that his home actually survived. His comment about living in an ashtray is so approps. Most everyone can remember the Yellowstone fire of - gah 30 years ago????. It devastated the first national park. I went for a visit about 20 years after the fire. The evidence of mass destruction was still evident. Mountainsides of b lack matchsticks reaching for the sky. Still, up close on the ground were pine trees, about eight feet tall. It will take beyond his lifetime for the black forest to recover. So sad.
