The sun 4-3-2013

Some terrific prominences today, a neat arch and a curtain next to it. An area to keep an eye on in coming days, weather permitting. That big sunspot group is full of detail, as well. Lots of surface detail and several interesting flocculi. I ordered a double-stack etalon for my PST yesterday, it should be here by Friday. Currently on-sale for $245 off the regular price. This will make the surface detail really pop. Increased contrast. Sorry folks, that pretty much guarantees torrential rain and clouds for the upcoming weekend. Definitely my fault this time.

Osher Institute

All, The Osher Institute is looking for instructors to teach classes of which they have a passion and knowledge. If you are not familiar with Osher, their website is osher.utah.edu. It is continuing education for people 50 years and older. Classes are usually 6 weeks long, with a 1-1/2 hr lecture once per week. No tests, no homework. The Osher community is filled with enthusiastic, eager-to-learn "seniors." Courses have usually been given during the day, but recently classes have been offered in the evening. If you are interested in exploring opportunities, they are open to any subject about which you are passionate. I know they are interested in something along the lines of contributions that came from NASA, but they will look at other topics as well. They are currently looking for courses for fall 2013. Course proposals are due by April 15. On their website, go to the left menu and click Proposal Forms. Pay is minimal - in fact they call it an honorarium. There are University of Utah perks however, such as free access to the library and museums, free or reduced tickets to events, and taking Osher classes for free. Patrick, I actually kinda liked this latest Pan-STARRS pic... And Chuck, I agree completely about the image of the comet near Andromeda. On APOD I was surprised to learn that Pan-STARRS is currently the largest object in our solar system...pretty incredible to try and imagine! ATM report from 3/30/13

We had quite a session on 3/30/13! At my count, we had 12 people in attendance. The main work was getting a father/son 8" dob functional. This was a lot of work, but we pulled it off and Levi got first light with his scope by viewing the sun (with a full aperture solar filter of course). It reached focus with all the eyepieces we tried (and we tried many). All that remains for this scope is to be stained/painted, primary mirror coated and final assembly. Later that evening, we star tested and the primary mirror is looking good, so it will now go off to the coater. Levi is very excited about all this and thought it was cool to have the scope nearing completion. I believe this is important; getting people interested and excited for the hobby. Josh put together some optics for another bath interferometer. You may now address him as Mr. Bath... It looks as good as a professionally made telescope, and that is no joke. Jay and Jeff determined what the psi is on the azimuth bearing's teflon pads on Jeff's scope. This was done so that Jay can duplicate it and make his scope move better. From what I have heard, it is improved after Jay adjusted (smaller) the size of the pads. Next ATM session

The next ATM session will be on 4/27/13 starting at 09:00. This will be a different session, in that we well also hold a planning meeting for the Utah Star Party. My plan is to hold the regular ATM session from 09:00 until lunchtime, then starting around 13:30, hold the planning meeting for the star party.
