The Eyes

Hi gang, Last night was nearly perfect at the Wedge -- clear, steady, almost no breeze. I had overcome my telescope's mechanical difficulty, largely, and so had a great time taking a photo, just looking at the stars, and reading. Here's a view I made at that time of The Eyes colliding galaxies, NGC4438. I'm not overjoyed with the way it came out (it has some interference pattern, and color images were worthless). Thanks so much Barrett for the information. Wow, the size of a minivan. That was dang big. Lucky for all it broke up, or the angle of entry was so shallow. If it had made it all the way down it could have done some serious damage. We get pretty complacent, sometimes we need a wake-up call, or at lea st a little alarm going off. I remember an article that Asimov wrote MANY years ago about "city busters." It would have to have been larger than the minivan, still, we are like the ducks in the arcade - just one good hit .....

Ahhhh, I wish I could have heard her. She may have mentioned that cosmonaut story in the book. Funny if you think about it - hang yourself - but you can't because it is zero g. Her book "Spook" is sub titled "Science tackles the afterlife." Most of her research centered on spiritualists and mediums. Their heyday was in the early 20th century. Amazing what tho se people were willing to do to convince people they were in contact, and the chapter on ectoplasm was hysterical. The poor woman went to the Cambridge Library and checked out some preserved "ectoplasm" (cheeze cloth). She held up pulling it out to look at it silently begging the other serious researchers to leave for lunch. The cloth measured 10 feet by 3 feet. And the place the medium hid it was - well - unique. One thing that got me thinking after reading "Packing for Mars" was Neil Armstrong. He is now 82 years old! He left NASA in 1971 and got a teaching job at a small college in Cincinati. He has never writen his memoirs. While Buzz Aldrin did a stint on "Dancing with the Stars." Armstrong has been very private. He protects his privacy and his legacy (if he thinks of it that way) very strongly. Searching the internet, there was a story that Armstrong sued his barber of 20 years because the barber sold his hair clippings for profit. Made the barber donate the value to a charity. We are going to lose something important when he dies.

Erik and everyone else, I recommend the book "Packing for Mars" by Mary Roach. Written a few years ago, she is a scientist/journalist who seriously researched all the "little things" that go into human space exploration. While you will laugh a great deal, hopefully you will, like myself, come to the realization it just ain't that easy. Thanks to her research, you will get a clearer understanding about what we, as a nation, asked all our astronauts (and cosmonauts - she researched them too) to put up with. It's not so much about the "right stuff" but more about " what are you willing to put up with to go into space." Then contemplate a 500 day mission to Mars - yikes! Being alone with the same few p eople for 500 days, feeding those few people for 500 days, handling human waste disposal for 500 days, providing enough air for 500 days . The ability to get the ship and to and from Mars is easy, the devil is in the details.
