Mark your calendar for early evening May 7. Their will be a close encounter between the Ring nebula and periodic comet 73P. The comet will be close to earth so its exact position in the sky will depend stongly on your location on the globe. Go to spaceweather.com and use the link at the bottom of the page for "Observable Comets". 73p is in the list and includes orbital elements and a link for daily ephemerides. To those inSLAS, there's three telescopes that make up the club's SPOC site. They each have a nickname. One is the Bogdan, another is the Grim, what is the affectionate name for the third (16" reflector) scope? (For the life of me, I can't remember and have been racking my brain the whole day, trying to come up with it).

Observing Site Near Delta

I am going to attend a funeral in Delta on Saturday and we are going to spend the night (long story, my in-laws can only go one way in one day). So, since we are taking two cars I am thinking of taking one of my scopes to get away from my in-laws on Saturday night (with wife's approval). Does anyone know if there are any good observing locations within say 45 minutes of Delta? Thanks, Jay

TeleVue Gibraltar mount for sale

Hi, I bought this mount in late 2001 but haven't used it much since I bought my Losmandy GM-8 mount. It is in excellent condition and I have cleaned off most of the dust. It's been sitting in my bedroom and I've decided to sell it. E-mail me if interested before I put it on Astromart. I just took some pictures but will need to download them to the computer. Debbie

Club meeting topics

Greetings all, My name is Ron Vanderhule, currently serving as president of Ogden Astronomical Society. As those of you that have been in this position know, arranging topics for club meetings can be challenging. I have served as president before and always try to get a live person in front of the members for lectures or demonstrations. Some of the astronomy and physic professors from WSU oblige us once or twice a year. So, the purpose of this post is to extend an invitation to the area astro community to consider helming an OAS meeting. Many of you have spent hours putting together a presentation for SLAS and have given it once. Here is your opportunity to dust it off and present it again. If you are not a club member of any kind, just an avid astronomer with something to share, that would work also. If your topic is short we could bundle it with something else. Our open floor meetings ( aka show and tell ) are our favorites. So what topics? Anything from atm'ing to plasma theory. We are flexible and open. Our long time member Dale Hooper gave a demonstration on Radio Astronomy at SLAS last spring and will present it for OAS in Nov. Our meetings are held at the Ott Planetarium on the campus of WSU ( gloat ) with the high tech contrivances available for use. Our meetings are held the second Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm. We finally got Dave's new Celestron Goto mount to work last night. He used a different cord and the thing finally worked. Another thing we found out is when you get near the zenith, the scope can bump up against the tripod and it threw the alignment off. He realigned on Jupiter after I found it using the hand paddle. After we viewed Jupiter, we looked at Uranus and Neptune. There is a learning curve to these Goto mounts. I explained to him that it would ge easier as he got to know the mount and computer.
