Tonight, the LCROSS satellite will pass between Cor Caroli (alf CvN) and M94 (for my o.p. at W110 N41) at around 7UT 2009. Because there are no USPCMD two-line elements,topocentric plots can be generated using the NASA JPL Horizons emphermis generator. http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons.cgi It is uncertain whether the satellite will be too faint to image. Use 15 mags for image exposure planning. See chart at: http://members.csolutions.net/fisherka/astronote/observed/LCROSS/CruiseFind… in http://canopus56.wikispaces.com/LCROSS_Cruise_Orbit I notice that LCROSS at around 466,000km, unlike most lower fast moving satellites, has an parallax "hump" in its daily orbital path. This appears to be related to realitively slow orbital movement of the satellite each night. The relative change of the observer on the Earth's rotating surface generates a slight parallax movement. Wind might be considered. For comfort, I use an easily detachable black artist board as the Sun glare and heat blocker. When light intermitent wind kicks up, a fixed panel can act as a sail and vibrate the PST. I use the artist board because I can easily pull it off, thus reducing the wind profile of the PST and mount. The separate camera stand with a sun blocker is the best for Sun protection and observing comfort, but is too much gear to haul around for my personal preferences. - Clear Skies - Kurt

Milky Way - From Cygnus to Sagittarius

Hi all. I just added an image that I took from the mountains in Idaho on Wednesday night. It was a 30 second exposure using my Nikon D700 with a 14mm F/2.8 Nikkor lens. The skies there were incredibly dark and the image really turned out nice for a single 30 second image. The posted version is a 25% scale of the original. It was shot at ISO6400. Take a look.
