Mark your calendar for early evening May 7. Their will be a close encounter between the Ring nebula and periodic comet 73P. The comet will be close to earth so its exact position in the sky will depend stongly on your location on the globe. Go to spaceweather.com and use the link at the bottom of the page for "Observable Comets". 73p is in the list and includes orbital elements and a link for daily ephemerides. Dark Skies

Just returned from taking possession of our new house about 5 miles S of Hurricane (don't Taser me) Utah. Got up at midnight with the moon just setting and lighting the Hurricane Cliffs. I swear the Milky Way was so bright it might have been casting a shadow! So many stars that I was confused (more than normal) as to what constellations I was looking at! WOW, right decision to move there. As we get settled in, a future invite to SLAS members to visit and set up for observation and photography. So far, no rattlesnakes or scorpions in the back yard. Hi Steve, I'm Debbie and I live in Green Valley. I'm hoping to go up Kolob Reservoir next month to escape the heat and do some serious observing. It's starting to heat up here now. I have to go on my bike ride at 6:30 in the morning now. Anyway, when I go to Zion I'm going to swing by the Anazasi Plateau observing site. It is really dark there with wonderful views. It is a vacant cul-de-sac full of empty lots and only an hour's drive from my house. I need to dust off my 15" Obsession and do some observing soon. We set up at Fort Pearce last February but had hazy skies. If you are south of Hurricane you should be able to spot Omega Centauri in the spring skies. I wish they would shield those lights on the baseball field in Hurricane. Are you near the airport? I hope you like it there and stay a long time. I love it down here except in July. We go to Duck Creek Village every July to escape the heat. There is plenty to do down here. You will never be bored. Bryce Canyon

I have been so busy moving I didn’t see anyone mention the Bryce Canyon trip on the list. As for me I enjoyed it thoroughly. I planned on staying Thur and Fri nights but I had to cut it short due to moving concerns. Chuck, I set up the Galileo’s on your mount and had several people ask about it. One guy took pictures of it, so I gave him your email address at Yahoo. He commented on what an “elegant design” it was. I had to agree. On Thursday night the skies cleared up after a day of threatening weather. Before the sun went down I got the Galileo’s set up with my also Chuck Hards sun filters on them. The sun didn’t have a blemish on it. I got my 12.5” Newt/Dob collimated with the help of Bob Taylor and others. With a glance up and down the line there were a bunch of scopes anticipating where Polaris was going to show up as the sky darkened. I enjoyed talking to the SALSers before things got going. After that there was not time. When the rangers opened the gates there was a surprising (to me) flood of folks that came to observe. I had a constant line of interested observers at my scope and I am sure everyone else did too until the rangers called for the last shuttle. The kids are always the most fun listening to their comments. I am hooked. I will be back next year and hope to get my family to take their kids next year too. Jim
