Howard, After thinking about it, probably the better approach would be to track for an hour around the event and to take fits images at 5 minute intervals and for 1 minute intervals for 10 minutes around each eclipse. I didn't do the small angle distance computation between satellite and Jupiter to guage an object framing TFOV. Roughly estimating using a max apparent size of 50" for the Jupiter disk at opposition and that target satellite is usually between 1 and 4 apparent Jupiter disks from Jupiter, I'm guesstimating a 5 arcmin TFOV would do it and capture at least one or two other Galiean moons in the process. For visual, I plan to start with the basic mid-range power of 10x to 17x per inch of apeture (100-170x power in my 10 inch, 1100 mm/fl Newt). For my scope that's about a 7mm to 10mm lens giving a TFOV of 28 and 48 arcmins respectively. Since Jupiter will be low on the horizon with high turbulence, there isn't much call to think in terms of bumping up the power. I haven't given any thought to the split distance for lower-power binocular. For some of the eclipse reappearance (EcR, emersion) events, will the satellite be too close to Jupiter so a visual observer will not be able to split it from the disk? IMHO, this will not be a problem. At most it might occur on the near opposition events in July. For photographic, at my fl of 1100mm, a Meade DSI gives an 11 x 15 arcmin TFOV on direct projection, which is suited for the target. Jovian moon eclipse observing list for 2008 from SLC UT

This is to announce a star party cheat sheet on observing 2008 eclipses of Jovian moons from the Intermountain Region (111W long), USA. http://members.csolutions.net/fisherka/astronote/tours/JMEcl2008/JupEclSP.h… While single and rarer double satellite transit events one of the more popular Jovian observing pasttimes, another category of event - Jovian satellite eclipses are also interesting. Eighteen eclipse opportunities were extracted from the RASC 2008 Observer's Handbook that apply to the author's observing point at 111W longitude, 41N latitude. Supplemental ephemeris data was gathered, along with simulated images of the events and orrey graphics. The observing list is intended for distribution as a handout at public star parties when Jupiter first becomes visible at your observing point. An animated gif shows the relative motions of the Earth and Jupiter across six months of observing events. All of the simulated views in the observing list can be seen as a Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow. This sky party presentation cheat sheet was originally conceived as an observing list for school and scout parties. Kids in urban areas typically have binoculars and light-polluted urban skies, cannot see Jovian cloud detail, but can easily see the Galiean moons. Observing during an eclipse emersion event would allow them to see another active astronomical event, like a moving comet, instead of star hopping for static objects, like globular clusters. Beginner to advanced planetary imagers may want to consider making a movie of a Jovian satellite emersion and immersion events. Chuck, yup, the same thing happened to me. I called the 800 number 1 1/2 months ago to have a copy sent, which they said they would do, but nothing ever happened. I called again a couple weeks ago; their response was that they were out of stock in the past, but were in stock now and they would send a copy - nothing received yet. It may be worth it to walk outside now (6:05pm) and look to the east for the rising full Moon over the Wasatch. Previously, I have seen one Moon pillar about this time of year under similar conditions. These types of atmospheric pillars are more likely when the air contains ice crystals. The full Moon is rising - while started rising - over the nautical horizon just a few minutes ago at 5:55pm. In Salt Lake it will still by obscured by the Wasatch Mtns and probably will not be visible for another 15 - 25 minutes. Asteroid to pass close next week

Asteroid 2007 TU24 will pass Earth just a bit further away than the Moon next Monday night / Tuesday morning (the 28/29th) MST. Shining at mag 11.2 and zipping along at 3 arc minutes per minute it and it's motion against the background sky should be visible in even small scopes. For Utahans it will be close to straight up Monday evening at 7 pm and be visible for several hours before getting down in the murk an hour or so after midnight. Those wanting to try to find and follow the asteroid can obtain RA/ Dec from: http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/MPEph/MPEph.html Once there: 1) Click on the "Return ephemerides" button. 2) Enter "2007 TU24" (without the quotation marks but with the space) in the search box. 3) Enter "2008 01 28 000000" in the "Ephemeris start date" box. 4) Enter "72" in the "Number of dates to output" box. 5) Click the "hours" button. 6) Enter "718" in the "Observatory code" box. 7) Click on the "Get Ephemerides/HTML page" near the top of the page. Remember that the dates and times listed in the output data will be UT so you'll need to subtract 7 hours to get MST. Clear skies! patrick

Wednesday ramblings

This morning I managed to spot Antares low in the east. The sun is moving eastward through the summer zodiac. Meteorologically, winter is half over- even though astronomically it's still got a tad over 2 months to go. It's effectively over when I take the Mazda out on the road for the first time around March 1st - a much more exciting event that the equinox! Anybody in SLAS still interested in doing the car show this year? I still like the idea of doing it as SPOC in conjunction with a sun-party, or late in the day leading into a star-party. If not as a fundraiser, maybe as a "meet and greet" for new members, as part of the Inreach effort. Possible BBQ? SPOC training event? Help me out here and toss-out some ideas. Can you tell that I've got spring and summer on my mind, and am officially sick of winter? ;o) BTW, if anybody was watching FOX 13 this morning, my daughter was on TV. She is the lead singer in her high-school band "The Willie Hendrix Experience". They got to do a brief stint playing Black Sabbath's classic hit "Iron Man" on FOX's "school of the week" morning segment. Rock On!

Skygazer's almanac 2008

I finally got around to opening my January S&T, and noticed that the Skygazer's almanac was missing. Anybody else not get theirs? It's included in every January issue. I'll call them Tuesday. Since the change of ownership, the paper quality has gone downhill and it just seems a bit cheaper overall. It's stapled again, no spine. Also, it appears that some editors formerly working at the Cambridge office have been sent back home. My old editor, Gary Seronik, is back in Vancouver. The magazine no longer has any kind of scientific feel to it. It is now a mainstream magazine for the layperson. You can get astronomy articles with as much or more depth in Time magazine or National Geographic. As someone who first encountered S&T about 37 years ago, I am saddened. It used to be much more interesting back then. Admittedly it was aimed at a smaller, more specialized audience, but nonetheless it illustrates that growth is not always a positive thing.
