Mark your calendar for early evening May 7. Their will be a close encounter between the Ring nebula and periodic comet 73P. The comet will be close to earth so its exact position in the sky will depend stongly on your location on the globe. Go to spaceweather.com and use the link at the bottom of the page for "Observable Comets". 73p is in the list and includes orbital elements and a link for daily ephemerides. OT: Sports cars

Just wondering if any other astro list members share my interest in sports cars and roadsters. I'm not talking about "point and shoot" horsepower muscle cars, but cars that go fast yet were designed for curves. Cars that were meant to be driven on the open road and enjoyed for the driving experience. Some examples would include the MG midget, the Triumph Spitfire, TR6 or TR7, Toyota 2000 GT, Jaguar XK-E series, Datsun 1600, 2000, or 240Z, Mazda RX-7, Miata, RX-8. Anybody?

backing up digital photos.

Utahgraphers: Is anyone using an external hard drive to backup their photo collection? I'm looking for recommendations in the 100 Gig range that runs from the USB port. It doesn't have to be super fast because I process on my main drive and just need a place for backup copies of things I want to keep. I'd like to just drag and drop files and or folders between two sessions of windows explorer and then go make a snack while it does it's thing. I'm wondering if they draw too much current to be really powered through the USB port as some advertise and is an external power source model a better idea. Also nice to have would be either hot swapable where you just plug it in when you use it but don't have to reboot to do so. That or a leave-it-hooked-up-unit that was smart enough to power itself down when not in use or when the computer is turned off. It's for a desk top machine so it doesn't need to be ultra portable. In The Shadow of the Moon Movie

Today I saw an excellent movie about the Apollo Moon Program, at the Salt Lake City Broadway Theater, called, "In The Shadow of the Moon". One thing that I have noticed from astronaut space pictures; they never show any stars in the sky. I assume that camera contrast resolution might have something to this. The astronauts claim that they could see stars in the sky. Any comments on this problem? Even when the astronauts were going into the Moon's shadow, I didn't see any stars. Although, that could be because the camera was aimed directly at the lunar landscape. Sincerely, J. David Baxter

Observing report with the F/40 singlet configuration: Lunar craters along the terminator clearly discerned as such. Any detail on the face of the moon, however, was too awash with color to clearly see. Jupiter was a colored disk, tint depending on just where the eyepeice was racked in relation to the part of the spectrum in focus at that particular point. No Jovian moons seen in a bright dusky sky. I may try later if I don't fall asleep first. Right now I feel very grateful for modern optics, and a renewed appreciation for astonomical pioneers who made some incredible discoveries with stinko telescopes.

How wide is the track? (will I be able to see it from Bountiful?) The Calsky.com site indicates the ISS will be invisible (due to brightness of moon or in the earth's shadow?) ISS is predicted to cross the Moon Tuesday morning as seen from SPOC at 3h 51m 12.17s, The ground track then heads SE across the mountains and across the extreme southern Salt Lake Valley. Backing up Digital Photos

Dan: I use a Western Digital Passport portable drive for backing up photos and others important documents. I works off of USB power only, no other power supply is needed. It's small and easy to transport. I think you can get them up to 250GB these days. Highly recommended. A great solution for backing up photos. You may want to look at their My Book Series which is not a portable but still works off just the USB drive and has excellent capacity to price. Bob Taylor

A comet's rocky tail

Regarding SOHO's newly announced 1st periodic comet, a guy from JPL just posted this on the Minor Planet List serve. Kind of fun to think of a comet tail made out of rock. +++++ At perihelion, the subsolar temperature on this body's surface is around 1600 K. All common silicate minerals melt by around 1200 K, so at perihelion even ordinary rocky silicates are heated to boiling and no doubt vaporizing profusely. Yes, it's a "comet" in the sense that it is no doubt giving off large amounts of vapor, but it's rock vapor, not "ice" in any sense of the word. +++++ patrick
