Although Jupiter is in the low-altitude ecliptic hole of Sagittarius, it will be at opposition on Tues, June 5 at 5:00pm. The numbers, from Astronomy.com, are: JUN 05 at 23 hr UT: Opposition in Celestial Longitude [Tues. June 5 at 5:00PM MDT] JUN 05 at 23 hr UT: Greatest Elongation of 179.3° [Tues. June 5 at 5:00PM MDT] JUN 06 at 01 hr UT: Opposition in Right Ascension [Tues. June 5 at 6:00PM MDT] JUN 06 at 04 hr UT: Greatest Brilliance at Mag -2.6 [Tues. June 5 at 10:00PM MDT] JUN 07 at 12 hr UT: Closest Approach at 4.30438 AU [Tues. First, scopes are NOT right at the cars. Cars will be along the edge of the lot (or in an adjacent lot) and scopes will be in the middle. It's helpful to bring along a card table for stuff. The scope areas will be marked, and the rangers are pretty insistent that scopes go right in those areas (they're trying to keep reasonable crowd flow). They'll also ask you not to use green lasers (at least till the crowds thin) and they'll also have a suggested list of objects to view. This list is generally ignored. While occasionally it might feel a little over-organized (especially for a star party), the rangers and volunteers are very good at preparing the guests and in keeping the flow going. There are some nice folks down there. Insofar as the training, it's really pretty much common sense. If a guest starts going on about creationism or politics or whatever, it's up to us to steer out of that briar patch and to keep things friendly and, er, focused. Personally, I haven't had any of those situations come up at Bryce. You'll enjoy the guests. They're from all over the world and very few have been shown these kinds of skies. I'd imagine quite a few go home thinking about scopes of their own. MC

Question On Recently Discovered Planet

I have a question on the recently discovered Earth-Like Planet. It is suppose to orbit its sun once every 14 Earth days. It is also suppose to have the same face to its sun, as it orbits it. That would mean on average that its daytime would be 7 Earth days, and its nightime would be 7 Earth days. On the daytime side, temperatures are comparable to Earth-like springtime temperatures. But how cold would the planet get during its nightime period? I realize that temperatures could vary by latitude. Sincerely, J. David Baxter baxman2(a)comcast.net

I worked in the financial district in downtown San Francisco. I arrived on a subway commuter train that disgorged close to a thousand people at the first station in town. The platform was standing room only until people made it up the escalators, 4 stories high to the street. About the time the last people shuffled on to the escalators, the next train would arrive and disgorge another thousand people. All the women wore expensive running shoes and had a pair of high heels tucked into the top of their large sholder bag purse, and they slipped into them when they reached their desks. My office was on the 23 floor and out the window almost exactly straight down was the entrance to the subway train station. So almost all of my commute after leaving the train was in the vertical direction. I remember moving to Salt Lake in '94 and thinking that this was a "boutique city". When Fred Meyers opened a two story store on 4th south, I remeber for about a year the locals would come in and be amazed and frightened by the escalator. It was "charming". Joe, 22 years ago, I worked in downtown SLC, in the "concrete canyons". During the winter, I arrived at work in the morning in the dark, and went home in the early evening, in the dark. Lunchtime was the only time I had a chance of getting any daylight in my life, for a week at a time. And if I had to work through lunch (a common occurrance), there went that opportunity. I always longed for Daylight time through the dead of winter, just so I could have an hour of daylight after work. And BTW, I worked in a darkroom back then!
