Mark your calendar for early evening May 7. Their will be a close encounter between the Ring nebula and periodic comet 73P. The comet will be close to earth so its exact position in the sky will depend stongly on your location on the globe. Go to spaceweather.com and use the link at the bottom of the page for "Observable Comets". 73p is in the list and includes orbital elements and a link for daily ephemerides. Within the last month there's been renewed information of the rate of melting of the Greenland ice-sheet, in addition to melting in other zones, such as Mt. Kilimanjaro. Thousands of ice cores taken over the last century show that the ice goes back tens of thousands of years. If it had been as warm during the Roman era as your sources indicate, that ice would have melted then or would never have formed. Arctic permafrost that has been stable since the last ice age (as shown by the number of mammoths preserved in it) is rapidly turning to mush. Of course you can find a few scientists who disagree with this assessment, just like you can find a few scientists who don't like evolution. You can find a few scientists who believe in ghosts, in Sasquatch, in fairies, in alien abduction, and in all sorts of things. It is extremely rare in science that someone who goes against the grain is shown to be correct (Galileo, Kepler, etc). Most of them are just cranks.

Zodiacal light observing season -CONTEST-

As soon as the moon is out of the picture for early evening (next week), it will mark the beginning of the prime season for looking for the Zodiacal light in the western sky as soon as it's dark enough. Absolutely pristine skies are not essential. I have seen it plainly from the Grantsville area, just off I-80 a few hundred yards. It's probably visible from SPOC if not too many local lights are on at the time. I'll award a prize of my choosing for the best Zodiacal light photo posted to the Gallery. Deadline will be March 30, so everyone has 8 weeks to pull something together. The image must be made during the contest period. Film or digital, both methods encouraged, digital processing or classic darkroom enhancement methods are allowed. In fact, to make it fair, we'll have a professional category and an amateur category, so folks like Rob don't blow the rest of us out of the water. The prizes will be some modest piece of astro hardware or literature from my "archives". Emphasis on "modest". Winners will be determined by jury votes, jurists to be chosen by me. Jurists may enter but may not vote for themselves. Entries will be judged from the posted Gallery submissions, no private submissions to the judges. If you don't want to set up a Gallery page just for your contest entry, I'm sure some of us already there will stick your photo up in one of our sections. The Sun

There are two decent-sized sunspots groups visible right now, one is close to center, the other between center and the limb. The central group is very interesting, with many smaller spots grouped in an arc aroung the large central spot. I get the feeling that more spots would be visible with increased aperture. No doubt one of these was responsible for the recent auroral alert. A little vigilance here might bear fruit. Sure is nice to see the sun in a clear, blue sky again. ____________________________________________________________________________________ We won't tell. Allergies and camping

Hello everyone, Fran, my considerably better half, is interested in camping with me sometime at Bryce or Capitol Reef. However, she's got lots of allergies--grass, sage, many pollens, etc--and she's really afraid that the vegetation around the campsites might set her off. For a number of reasons, she tries to stay away from allergy medications when she can. Because I don't share these allergies, I have no idea whether these campsites might be problematic or not. If there's anyone who can speak from personal experience, I'd appreciate your letting me know about it, either on-list or off. Thanks much, Michael
