Mark your calendar for early evening May 7. Their will be a close encounter between the Ring nebula and periodic comet 73P. The comet will be close to earth so its exact position in the sky will depend stongly on your location on the globe. Go to spaceweather.com and use the link at the bottom of the page for "Observable Comets". 73p is in the list and includes orbital elements and a link for daily ephemerides. Within the last month there's been renewed information of the rate of melting of the Greenland ice-sheet, in addition to melting in other zones, such as Mt. Kilimanjaro. Thousands of ice cores taken over the last century show that the ice goes back tens of thousands of years. If it had been as warm during the Roman era as your sources indicate, that ice would have melted then or would never have formed. Arctic permafrost that has been stable since the last ice age (as shown by the number of mammoths preserved in it) is rapidly turning to mush. Of course you can find a few scientists who disagree with this assessment, just like you can find a few scientists who don't like evolution. You can find a few scientists who believe in ghosts, in Sasquatch, in fairies, in alien abduction, and in all sorts of things. It is extremely rare in science that someone who goes against the grain is shown to be correct (Galileo, Kepler, etc). Most of them are just cranks.

On page 4 of my Gallery page, I have posted a 5-shot mosaic of the entire gym at Lincoln elementary, showing all the projects set-up for judging at the Granite District Science Fair last Wednesday. This was a quick and dirty digital mosaic and isn't seamless yet (I've got more work to do on it), but it conveys the scale of the event. If you can view the image in a program that allows zooming-in, there is a fair amount of detail, although I did reduce the original mosaic file size. Judging takes 4 hours, by a small army of judges. Then the day is capped-off with an awards ceremony in the school auditorium in the early evening. Lincoln used to be a jr. high, so the facilities are terrific, not typical elementary-school architectural scale. It's a fun, interesting way to spend an afternoon. If Whitney enters again next year, I'll post the date, time and address for anyone else who would like to attend. Eclipse pictures

I found this on yahoo's digital astro group. Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I did. Deb Dear Friends, At the risk of being trite, the exhiliration one experiences watching a total solar eclipse is beyond description and is something that every amateur and professional astronomer should experience at least once in their lifetime. We were privy to exceptional weather and temperatures for the observation (and imaging) of this year's total solar eclipse whose path of totality included the 9-sq km Greek island of Kastelorizo in the eastern Aegean. With well over 3000 visitors to the island, fifteen times the permanent population of this small island community, many visitors from all parts of the world observed and marvelled at the brilliant show put on by our two most visible and dominant celestial neighbours during the course of approximately 2.5 hrs. The three minutes of totality yielded a breathtaking view of the ethereal corona, stunning prominences placed all over the solar limb as well as a magical view of Baily's beads. Regrettably these three minutes seemed to pass in a matter of seconds, for the velvet blue sky very gradually returned to its normal self and our feathered friends started their chirping in anticipation of a "new" sunrise. The animation is really cool. I liked watching the clouds also. In doing so, I have some questions. Does anyone know what these images were taken from? How high was it? There are 3 flashes of light going from right to left in the middle of the picture. It decreases in brightness as it goes to the left. What caused the flashes? Hi Dave, I'm really looking forward to seeing your pictures. But, next year I don't think you should be allowed out of town during the Messier Marathon. We were 100% clouded out.
