Mark your calendar for early evening May 7. Their will be a close encounter between the Ring nebula and periodic comet 73P. The comet will be close to earth so its exact position in the sky will depend stongly on your location on the globe. Within the last month there's been renewed information of the rate of melting of the Greenland ice-sheet, in addition to melting in other zones, such as Mt. Kilimanjaro. Thousands of ice cores taken over the last century show that the ice goes back tens of thousands of years. If it had been as warm during the Roman era as your sources indicate, that ice would have melted then or would never have formed. Arctic permafrost that has been stable since the last ice age (as shown by the number of mammoths preserved in it) is rapidly turning to mush. Of course you can find a few scientists who disagree with this assessment, just like you can find a few scientists who don't like evolution. You can find a few scientists who believe in ghosts, in Sasquatch, in fairies, in alien abduction, and in all sorts of things. It is extremely rare in science that someone who goes against the grain is shown to be correct (Galileo, Kepler, etc). Most of them are just cranks.

I resolve in 2007 (2007, can you believe it???) to: 1. Get my 17.5" scope operational as an alt-az at least (equatorial mode can wait if necessary). 2. Finish all the binocular parallelograms on my plate. 3. Attend several star-parties and club meetings. He he naw, I haven't noticed that. I do admit most messages I just skim, as my time is now taken up mostly by my dogs. I've started doing some collie rescue and I have two collies who are in need of homes. :) They are both dolls! Not a top-quality Japanese or German binocular, probably has BK-7 prisms (no big deal in actual use). But the budget Chinese binoculars have been very good lately (Oberwerk, Celestron, Apogee, Barska, Galileo, etc.) and for the money, it's hard to go wrong. Secondary heaters

Do any of you large Newtonian users employ a secondary heater for anti-dew/frost use? I've never used or needed any kind of optic heaters; a conventional tube acts as a really long dew-cap. I was wondering if dew or frost is a problem with open-frame, truss-tube Newtonians? Oops, I have used a small chemical hand-warmer rubber-banded to the eyepiece, but that's it.
