New Images - Sunset at Wolf Creek

Hi all. I added three images of the sunset at Wolf Creek on Friday night. I think they turned out pretty good. SETIers unhappy with Luskin

Well, the SL Trib ID article (http://sltrib.com/ci_2997771 <http://sltrib.com/ci_2997771> ) made it to the radio astronomy & SETI lists, and needless to say, they were a bit unhappy with the following statement made by Casey Luskin, "SETI is an attempt to identify intelligent design in radio signals from outer space, signals with an intelligent origin rather than a natural origin." Here is a link to a recent satellite image of New Orleans, post-hurricane. You can pan around and zoom in and out. Wolf Creek tonight

The forecast I looked at (as if those things mean anything!) shows that tonight after midnight may be the best opportunity for clear skies this weekend. Anyone have different info? I'll probably be up there tonight. Tubing needed

Before I tool-up a mandrel to make a fiberglass tube, I thought I'd ask if anyone had, or knew of a source of about a 4-foot length of aluminum tubing, 3-9/16" OD = 3.56" OD = ~90mm OD. Thin wall, about 1/16" = 0.0625" = ~1.5mm. This would save me some time and effort. I already know about Marmon-Keystone and Affiliated Metals, they have nothing. A consideration for a spacecraft's computer which is every bit as important as power is survivability. These things must survive extremes of temperature and radiation--not to mention a fair bit of physical abuse. Some processors are 'hardened' by special aspects of chip construction, others by their enclosures. When you think of the absolute hell that some of these craft fly through, it's amazing they work at all. Given the expense of a service call, it's not surprising that a flightworthy processor gets used for quite some time.

Speaking of forums

For those who like forums, this just showed up in my inbox. Patrick Bad Astronomy and Universe Today Forums Will Merge Sep 1, 2005 - I just wanted to let you know that Phil Plait (from Bad Astronomy http://www.badastronomy.com ) and I have decided to merge our two discussion forums together into one super forum. With a combined 11,000ish members this will create one of the largest space and astronomy-related communities on the Internet. Phil and I felt that our two communities were very similar, and there's a lot of overlap between members, topics, discussions, etc, that this merger just made sense. We'll both be very active in this new forum, and be sharing administrative responsibilities. I'm going to be taking the Universe Today forum offline on the evening of Saturday, September 3rd, and then we'll be merging the forums together. Hopefully within 24-48 hours we'll have the new forum live and running. If everything goes well all the posts from both forums will be nicely shuffled into the new structure. You should be able to just log into the new forum as you did before. I'll provide more details about how to actually reach it once it's live. Our two news sites will remain separate, so we're just merging the forums.
