If you look at the first couple of shots in that set, the frosty-looking patch in the foreground actually appears to be casting a shadow. Quite curious. Michael -- click on Panoramic Camera, Sol 39. Then look at the last two photos (of the six posted). Is that ICE that the rocks are sticking out of? Carbon monoxide snow or ice? A field of odd-looking dust? You waited too long. You should have bought it a few years ago when I did. I got almost 2000 acres for $20. It is interesting that on the letter that comes with the deed, he states that his lawyers made him stamp Novelty Gift on the back on the deed. He also sends out a Bill of Rights. They appear to be just a joke. I am surpised that anyone would actually see them as real. Fifty-four bucks!

With Valentine's day nearby the "International Star Registry" scammers are out in full-force on the radio again. A co-worker bought one of their "name a star" scams a few years ago and was so happy with his photocopied page from an old Skalnate-Pleso atlas that had an arrow pointing to a 10th mag star - labelled with his wife's name, the Epoch 1950 coordinates for the star, and the $5 booklet on astronomy that came with it. I didn't have the heart to tell him that he had been ripped off. I've emailed these people before and told them what I thought of their operation - their reply is that they are sorry you feel that way. Unfortunately, nothing these clods claim is untrue. It's deceptive, yes, but not untrue. They claim your name will go in a book in the Registry of Copyrights. Big deal. I've got lots of stuff under copyright and it requires no great effort. They let people come to their own conclusions that this means something, which of course it doesn't. If you complain too loudly, calling them liars, they will indeed sue you and win. They're not lying, quite. Their entire business is based on a sufficiency of uninformed and uncritical people. There are unfortunately plenty of those around. For what it's worth, I regularly complained to Boston media every year when those ads began to run. I was careful not to call them liars, but tried to point out that the basis of their business was deceptive. Fat lot of good it did me. Radio and TV stations would sell ads for the Hitler Youth as long as the checks clear. All you can do is to try and spread the truth. In my opinion - they should be able to afford some pretty good lawyers with a scam like this.
