Anyone who discovers debris from the accident or who has film or video evidence that may be of value to the investigation team is urged to use these contacts. Please avoid contact with any debris, because it may be hazardous as a result of toxic propellants aboard the Shuttle. Telephone reports should be directed to the following number: 281/483-3388 Text reports and images should be e-mailed to: nasamitimages(a)jsc.nasa.gov The e-mail address is: columbiaimages(a)nasa.gov All debris is U.S. Government property and is critical to the investigation of the mishap. All debris from the accident is to be left alone and reported to Government authorities. Unauthorized persons found in possession of accident debris will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. -end-

I also saw some orange brightening directly overhead in Ivins UT. I thought it had to do with the rockets or something. I've never seen anything like it. Debbie

Rich, I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I just had my 20/15 glasses on. We saw it come over Utah Mountain just before 6:56 this morning. It looked like a bright fireball. I went back to bed at 7:30 so I didn't find out about it till after 9 am. I didn't really believe it till I saw it on CNN. Debbie

I just got a phone call from one of the directors at Channel 4 news. She wants to hear from anyone that saw the flyover this morning from down south, and apparently wants to do a personal interview with those willing to be on camera (Patrick, are you back yet?). They are also looking for someone who has a model of the space shuttle that would be willing to let them use it for the news segment (all of Hansen Plaetarium's stuff is in boxes it seems, ready for the move to the Gateway location). After the Apollo 1 fire and again after the Challenger disaster, programs were put on hold for a time to analyze those events (as was appropriate) to ensure that future missions would avoid the same fate. However, when the time was right and corrections to programs and equipment were made, the space programs resumed at full-pace. I'm sure the same will happen again. Wow. The highs and lows of Astronomy. On the way down to rendevouz at exit 23 with a group of people, I was hopeful. Hopeful the clouds wouldn't impair our vision. Hopeful the conditions in Florida would allow a landing. Hopeful to be rewarded for our 8 hour round trip drive. When Columbia came over, I was amazed. I was not prepared for how bright and beautiful it was. I thought it would last about 4 minutes. It was no where close to being that long. It came quick and left quick, but it was spectacular. One of the things I enjoy about astronomy are the moments when my mind allows me to briefly comprehend what I'm seeing. That beautiful meteor streaking across the sky was really a man made object, with people in it, returning home from space. Wow. For about 30 minutes it was one of the coolest things I had ever seen. I was pumped. I guess it still is one of coolest things I ever saw. It's just that the ride home was a lot more somber. Maybe at our next S.L.A.S. meeting we can dedicate some time to all of our experiences and I would love to see everyones pictures.

A question about the future of space research and exploration

In no way am I experienced in this, and I'm truly concerned and would like to know of what might happen. While I am reading these emails regarding this morning's tragedy and reading people saying that this will put a big dent in space exploration, I can't help but be deeply concerned. I would just like someone to enlighten me on what this could do to the future of space research.
