Hi Friends, if anyone is interested, here's a view I took of the moon through my little 8" Thursday night -- I would love to know what star that is by the right. It's similar to the photo the Deseret News ran with my article about the eclipse, because our photographer shot through my telescope. But this is one I took with a different DN digital camera than the one he was using. It's part of a series of views I made. Once I get a freeware stacking program working better, I may be able to provide a much nicer view. Thanks David for straightening me out. Yes I thought it was this past Thursday. I now think the image was taken May 15, 10:14 PM MDT, and that the star is HD 138413, Mag 5.5 (this makes a *lot* more sense than a mag 11 star), RA 15:32:36.70, dec -19:40:13.5 . Again, this is deduced using the xephem program. Joe, Do you know when the photo was taken? If at 4:54 pm MDT Thursday, I would guess the star was GSC 4948-0140, magnitude 11.77, RA 12:31:12.86, Dec -0:24:02.1 . I get this from xephem. If it's a different time, tell me and I'll take another look. Joe, I retract my previous guess... Looking at the picture more carefully after sending the message, I conclude it was not the star I suggested (naively, I tried to orient myself by the terminator. Looking again closely at the patterns of the maria I see that I was off). If you can give me the time, that would be a big help. Jim

Rich, I really like NGC 1245 and NGC 1528 in Perseus. I also like to look at the Perseus A association with my refractor. I also remember looking at 6939 and 6846 for the first time at Mark Dakins house. It's one of those objects I keep going back to. I viewed NGC 908 and NGC 578 in Cetus Wednesday night. Both are pretty bright elongated galaxies. The M77, NGC 1055, and NGC 1073 galaxy group also showed up well that night. Cetus has alot of good galaxies to choose from although IC 1613 was a bit disappointing. NGC 247 shows up better in darker skies because of its low surface brightness. Debbie

Another big sunspot

Jim Gibson is having trouble posting today, but he asked me to call the groups attention to another big sunspot that has just rotated into view on the eastern (solar) limb. Ron Ford was nice enough to bring the SLAS H-alpha 'scope up to East High on Thursday. It's been Science Week up here, and for Physic Day I brought out two of our school scopes and the 10" f/7 Dob that I made last Spring under Brent Watson's careful eye. I have glass solar filters for all 3, and the large grouping of sunspots looked fantastic. Still, it was all overshadowed by the views through the beautiful machiine that Ron brought. There were incredible prominences near both the South pole and the Eastern limb (In any case it was near the top side and the left side; I'm assuming that refractor inverts the image) as well as long filaments (topping 1/4 to 1/3 the solar diameter) to the side of the major grouping. I swear, it was one of the most breathtaking things I've ever seen through a telescope, and at least 150 of our students and several of our faculty and staff got the privelege to see it, too. To top it off, the skies were absolutely clear until about a minute before the bell ending lunch period sounded. I couldn't have asked for anything more. Hats off to you Ron, and all of you involved in putting together such a marvelous instrument! John
