Dear Music Education Collegues, The National Association for Music Education has worked hard to help establish music education as a specific area of instruction listed in the Federal ESSA Standards. We do not want to lose this recognition and opportunity for music to be a required part of every child's education. There is still a lot of work to do to advocate for full funding for Title IV-A in FY2019. As you are preparing for your final concerts and posts on social media about your programs, please include the hashtag #musicstandsalone. You may also want to consider inviting school board members and other "decision makers" for your school and district to your concerts. I am personally inviting all of my new administrators so that they can be introduced to our audience and to help them to start the summer and next school year seeing the community support for music education in our school. High School Band Directors College of Southern Idaho Honor Band

Dear Music Educators: Thanks very much for your interest in, and willingness to publicize, the College of Southern Idaho’s first high school honor band. Not only is it our first time to offer an event such as this, it’s also the first time our IT staff has set up an online application system using a new software system they have only recently adopted. Somehow, even though we successfully tested the application system before publicizing it, for some reason, it did not record any of the student applications that were submitted prior to Saturday, March 17. The good news, though, is that the problem has been fixed, and the other good news is that the systemdidrecord the recommendations that directors submitted. Needless to say, we’re a little red-faced with embarrassment that parts of the system didn’t work as planned, and I would ask that, if you have any students who applied before the 17th, please ask them to go online and fill out the application a second time. I’ve attached an announcement that includes more information, including the link to our website. In the announcement, there is also a reminder that the deadline for priority consideration for the band is Monday, April 2. We’ve been getting a good response so far, but we could still use more of the following instruments: Double reeds Alto and bari sax Trumpet Horn Euphonium Percussion By the way, if you are recommending a euphonium player, it would help if you could indicate whether that student plays treble or bass clef. Thanks for your understanding as we work through this unexpected glitch. Utah Valley University's Drumline is Awarding $80, 000 in Scholarships this April!

We are now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 season. If you have students who love to drum, entertain, and really want to make the most out of their college experience, then they need to audition for UVU's Green Man Group. Every member who auditions and makes the line will receive receive between 3/4 & 100% Full Tuition Scholarship, plus a book scholarship for both Fall and Spring semesters 2018-2019. This is a very unique opportunity for a drumline scholarship. We've looked and we haven't found this kind of offer to play in a drumline anywhere else in the country. Scholarship Audition Steps: 1. Get the Packet - After your student registers, they will receive an audition packet via email containing audition music and instructions for submitting a video audition. Dear NAfME State Leaders, We are excited to announce that applications are NOW OPEN for the 2018 NAfME All-National Honor Ensembles. This year's event will take place November 25-28, 2018 at Walt Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, FL. The 2018 program will also include our first-ever All-National Honor Guitar Ensemble! Attached please find the 2018 promotional flyer, and ensemble selection procedure. We encourage you to advertise this opportunity to your members and allow students who participate in their school’s guitar ensemble program to apply. We are hoping this new ensemble will spark more growth of guitar education across the country! Please note that due to this being the first year of the Guitar Ensemble and the limited size (approximately 60), a specific number of seats from for any given state cannot be guaranteed. Consideration will be given to having as much representation from a variety of states as possible. Selection will be based primarily on student audition media for the Guitar Ensemble. About the Application: Students are required to upload an unedited and unaccompanied video performing the required repertoire for their instrument or voice part. Repertoire requirements can be found on theANHE website https://nafme.org/programs/all-national-honor-ensembles/ . There is the option of uploading an additional 2-minute video. This may be a piece of their choosing and may be accompanied or unaccompanied.Students auditioning for guitar will have a slightly different audition requirement and will have 2 required selections and will not choose a piece of their own. Guitar instruction opportunity

Hello all music teachers… For several years now, GAMA, NAfME and NAMM have sponsored guitar workshops for teachers. The focus of the class is not learning how to play guitar, necessarily, but how to TEACH guitar to students. I attended one in Las Vegas before I started teaching guitar and it was a LIFE SAVER! So many free materials and resources, scope & sequence, tips, etc. If you teach guitar or think you MIGHT be teaching guitar in the future, this is the course for you! There will be a level one for first timers and a level two for you more experienced guitar teachers. Dear UMEA members, I regret the confusion and alarm that a recent email sent to some members has caused. Attached is a statement that was approved by the board on September 22, 2017. At that time, it was delivered to the parties directly involved in an incident at the 2016 State Orchestra Festival. Now we send it to all members. A clarification of a point since the approval of this statement - There is reference to a petition to music teachers that at the time was being considered by those in charge of the orchestra festival in 2016, that petition was not circulated. But, now, since they have made this matter public through other means, we share this statement with you. I will gladly entertain any questions about this matter; by phone, by email or by personal conversation at our conference this weekend. There are a number of unique opportunities for you and/ or your parent groups to participate.
