Call for Proposals

The Elling O. Eide Center Research Library and Preserve in Sarasota, Florida is seeking proposals for conferences, workshops, and professional meetings related to China, Inner Asia, or greater East Asia. The objective of the Elling O. Eide Center’s academic programming is to sponsor professional meetings and scholarly collaborations related to early Chinese humanities that do not always receive financial support from institutions of higher education and grant funders.

Selected proposals will receive funding up to USD $25,000 for participant travel, transportation, lodging, meals, and incidentals, based on the organizer’s budget needs. Requests for funding, along with an itemized budget, should be included with the application. 

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and should be submitted at least six months prior to the proposed dates of the meeting. Proposals are welcome from all disciplinary backgrounds, research topics, and time periods, but preference will be given to proposals that focus on China, Inner Asia, or greater East Asia before 1500 CE. 

Situated on a beautiful 72-acre waterfront preserve on Little Sarasota Bay, the Center’s research library includes a spacious lecture hall accommodating up to 60 people and smaller meeting rooms configurable for 20 people. Wifi is available throughout the facility. The Center also has a large kitchen as well as indoor and outdoor seating areas suitable for receptions, meals, and breaks. Lodging is available on site free of charge for up to five participants, subject to availability. 

The library itself houses more than 60,000 volumes covering every period of Chinese history from ancient times to the modern era and an extensive collection of more than 300 scholarly journals from around the world. Areas of concentration include medieval China from the fourth through tenth centuries, pre-modern peoples and languages of Central and Inner Asia, and poetry of the Tang Dynasty, a field in which Elling O. Eide made a significant and lasting scholarly mark. Holdings are in Chinese, Uyghur, English, Japanese, Korean, Russian, German, and French.
