This will be a two-day roundtable discussion open to the public, following up on phase one, which was a series of fourteen miniature workshops held in early April. It seeks to interrogate the aesthetic, social, moral, and political criteria by which Chinese-language poems were considered "bad" in different times and places. Selected contributions will be compiled to create a book, The Worst Chinese Poetry: A Critical Anthology. · Day 1 (June 1) will feature four thematic roundtables based upon our larger workshop held in April. · Day 2 (June 2) will begin with a reflection on the workshop by our three headliners, then will shift to a free-form discussion open to all. While scholarship in the past has tended to concentrate on only one side of the Northern and Southern Dynasties histories and literatures, we hope to expand our view from the simple binary model of north and south to include the multiple sites of power and to emphasize the multi-polarity of this age from a decentered perspective. How did the master narratives of different court centers compete with one another? How did individual, clan, and state negotiate with the violent changes of the times and with one another at this particular historical juncture? How did the machinery of the state deal with a newly unified empire after nearly three hundred years of division? What can we gain as medievalists if we examine the limitations of our tools and methodologies imprinted with the modern disciplinary divide and its theoretical underpinnings? These are some of the questions we will address. Dear Members and Friends of the T'ang Studies Society The T’ang Studies Society is pleased to announce grants to support the production or dissemination of in-progress or completed research on the Tang dynasty. These grants are designed to facilitate the presentation of scholarly research to academic and/or general audiences. Expenses may be related to production such as copy-editing and online database entry, and dissemination such as publication subventions, image reproduction fees, volume completion fees, and conference organization costs. Applicants must be current members of the Society. Amount of Awards: Up to $3000 Application Deadline: June 1, 2021. Recipients will be notified by June 21, 2021.
