Police arrest student in Internet sex sting
Police arrest student in Internet sex sting Thursday, April 14, 2005 By Shane Farver Standard-Examiner staff sfarver@standard.net OGDEN -- A 20-year-old University of Utah student was booked into Weber County Jail Tuesday night after being caught in an Internet Crimes Against Children sting. Ogden Detective Colton Johansen said Scott John Alley began Internet correspondence Tuesday with what he thought was a 13-year-old girl. However, it was actually Johansen posing as the juvenile. "I talked to an individual that asked me who I was, where I was from, what age I was, and then proceeded to talk about sex and asked me if I would have sex with him," Johansen said. Johansen, posing as the girl, agreed to have sex with Alley and meet him at 25th Street and Adams Avenue in Ogden. Police pulled Alley over at the meeting place. Johansen said Alley had told him on the Internet what his car looked like. "Once we stopped him and started talking to him, he basically confessed to why he was there," Johansen said. "He knew we stopped him because he was there to talk to a 13-year-old." Johansen said the suspect was then arrested and read his rights. However, Johansen said Alleywaived his rights and confessed to authorities he was there to meet with the fictional 13-year-old girl. Johansen also said police found maps in Alley's car that detailed how to get to the meeting place in Ogden from Salt Lake City. Alley was booked under suspicion of enticing a child over the Internet, a second-degree felony. According to booking logs, he posted $10,000 in bail. Johansen is part of the ICAC task force. Members of the task force regularly pose as underage boys or girls in an attempt to catch pedophile suspects. He warned that while he poses as a 13-year-old girl, real children are in danger every time they get on the Internet. "A lot of adults and family members don't know this," Johansen said. "They don't know what their children are getting into. Parents should monitor them." Johansen added that the Ogden police force aggressively pursues those who commit crimes against children. "We've taken a lot of steps to keep these pedophiles off the streets," he said. Story Tools Printer Friendly E-mail This Article Text bigger | smaller
