Woman pleads guilty to kidnapping baby
A woman who stole a newborn baby from LDS Hospital in March has pleaded guilty in 3rd District Court. Elizabeth Marie Alarid, 39, was charged with first-degree felony child kidnapping. She pleaded guilty to a lesser count of second-degree felony child kidnapping. Alarid took the 3-day-old boy from his mother by posing as a nurse, but was arrested 20 minutes later at a nearby grocery store. Sentencing is set for Nov. 22 before Judge Judith Atherton.
Fatal stabbing in drug deal brings prison term
A Salt Lake City man has been sentenced to prison for up to 30 years for fatally stabbing another man last year during a drug deal. Initially charged with murder, Ernest Dean Marquez, 38, pleaded guilty in 3rd District Court to second-degree felony counts of manslaughter and robbery. He also pleaded guilty to possession of the heroin he stole from the victim, Juan Jose Mendoza-Carrillo, 24. Judge Leslie Lewis ordered two of the convictions to run consecutively. Police found the victim in a driveway near a laundry and followed the blood trail to the apartment where Marquez lived.
Escort business owner sentenced to jail, probation
The owner of a Midvale escort business charged with running a prostitution service has been sentenced to probation and 2 1/2 days in jail. Katrina Dyan Willis, 28, was initially charged in 3rd District Court with second-degree felony racketeering and two counts of third-degree felony exploiting prostitution. She pleaded guilty to one third-degree felony count of exploitation. Willis was charged after undercover police officers posing as customers answered newspaper advertisements placed by Willis under the business names "Naughty but Nice" and "Labor of Love."
Second man sentenced in beating, robbery case
The second of two Salt Lake County men charged with beating and robbing a man they believed had stolen their marijuana at a party last year has been sentenced to jail and probation. Boyd Haskan III, 25, pleaded guilty in 3rd District Court to second-degree felony counts of robbery and kidnapping and was sentenced to probation and one year in jail. Earlier this year, co-defendant Jeremy William Metcalf was sentenced to probation and 25 days in jail. The defendants drove the victim to a field, beat him and threatened to kill him, then threw him from his own car and drove away.
Felony arson and fraud charges dismissed
Felony arson and insurance fraud charges were dismissed Monday against a Sandy woman accused of setting fire to her home in 2001. Prosecutors had agreed to dismiss Leigh Janet Hardy's case after neighbors were unable to place her at the home on the day of the fire. But Hardy will be charged in justice court with misdemeanor insurance fraud for allegedly claiming the home was in good condition, prosecutors said. In fact, health department officials were considering condemning the residence as unlivable. Hardy's boyfriend, Douglas Rex Young - who is serving federal prison time for bank robbery - remains charged with starting the fire.
Guardsman gets prison term for sex with teens
A National Guardsman who had sex with two Utah teens he enticed over the Internet was sentenced Monday to prison for up to 30 years. Lennon Park, 28, of Saratoga Springs, had pleaded guilty in 3rd District Court to two second-degree felony counts of forcible sexual abuse. Judge Dennis Fuchs ordered the convictions to run consecutively. Park admitted to police that between November 2003 and January 2004, while on leave from duty in Iraq, he had sex with a 13-year-old Weber County girl and a 15-year-old Utah County girl. He also admitted having sex with a 13-year-old Colorado girl, investigators said.
