An Orem police sting turned deadly Saturday after a 56-year-old man tried to elude police, then turned a gun on himself in front of Orem Junior High School. The Utah County Sex Crimes Task Force set up at 11 a.m. and waited for the Ogden man, who had been communicating over the Internet with task force members posing as a 13-year-old girl. The man - whose name was not released Saturday - had arranged a meeting in Orem with the "girl." Police spotted his red SUV en route to a prearranged meeting place and attempted to box him in at 700 N. 800 West. He tried to evade officers by driving over a curb at 750 W. 700 North. He got about a block down 700 North before he was finally stopped. Aware of the man's criminal history, officers approached him with their weapons drawn and treated the stop as high risk. As they walked toward him, they heard a shot inside the SUV and saw him slump over. He was taken to nearby Timpanogos Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The scene was turned over to the Orem Department of Public Safety, which is investigating the shooting. - Lisa Rosetta This e-mail was initiated by machine [10.148.8.4] at IP [10.148.8.4].
