A popular East High School track coach pleaded not guilty Friday to a charge that he tried to entice a 13-year-old girl through Internet messages into having sex. U.S. Magistrate Brooke Wells set a trial date of March 29 for Greydon "Grady" Anthony Smith, who faces up to 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. The "girl" was actually an undercover police officer, whom the 45-year-old Smith allegedly arranged to meet Jan. 8 in a Layton park.
Ruling upheld in Summit County contract dispute
The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld a ruling in favor of Summit County in its dispute with former community development director Kerwin Jensen, who had alleged breach of contract because he was forced to resign in 2001. Jensen claimed the county had failed to pay him severance benefits, but U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell in Salt Lake City ruled there was no "forced resignation" under the terms of his contract. In a decision issued Thursday, the 10th Circuit agreed with Campbell.
