Hi all,
Copied below is the e-mail to our members and info for our rally on Tuesday June 18th. We would very much appreciate your attendance and support! Also, we in SLEA are very motivated to work together with you down the road to strengthen ALL jobs in SLCSD!
Thank you! James Tobler

---------------------------- Dear SLEA,
We need all who are available to come to our Show of Unity rally Tuesday, June 18th 11:30 am – 12:30 pm at Innovations High (1700 S. & State St. – southwest corner of SLCC). The SLCSB will be holding their annual planning meeting there that day and we want to ‘show our unity’ before the SLCSD and SLEA negotiating teams meet with a federal mediator later this summer. And of course, wear RED!
As I said in my last e-mail, the district’s “best and final” offer last week was a shift from our current steps and lanes salary schedule to the Canyon’s single lane schedule. Our analysis shows that educators who spend 20+ years in SLCSD would lose anywhere from $125,000 to $200,000 over the span of their career. We must improve our profession, not take steps back.
Invite any/all groups and individuals to come support us June 18th! It would be great if you could reach out to parents to get their support, specifically your school’s SCC and PTA. Improving the teaching profession is improving education. Invite all to wear RED 😉 Parents are strong voices in our district and the more we can engage and work with them the better!
The media has latched onto the 6% raise, and the district’s response is that the Canyon’s raise with the additional $100 is 6% and would be the best teacher pay in the valley. But, as I said, with further analysis we know this would hurt our profession for the long run. We are inviting the press, so if you are interviewed by someone, keep it positive and ‘on message’. We’d like to move away from the 6% message and have it be more about improving our steps and lanes to strengthen the teaching profession! Some ideas for your signs might be: Recruit and Retain Educators Strengthen Our Profession Student Success Respect Our Profession Rally for Teachers, Fight for Students Standing Stronger Together Listen
We’re tired of shared governance being compromised in many of our schools and many are feeling micromanaged by the district. We’d also like to address paid parental leave. A strong showing Tuesday will strengthen us not just for this contact negotiations but in addressing other issues down the road as well. Let’s show them we’re standing together!
Respectfully,
James Tobler SLEA President
