SLEA,
Your SLEA negotiation team met with the district this morning. Unfortunately, again we were offered the Canyons salary lane, but this time with an additional $100 increase to each step as their best and final offer. Knowing how this would hurt lifetime earnings for many SLCSD educators, and definitely be a blow to new teachers to our district after 10 years, we rejected their offer. We countered asking for a 5% increase to our current steps and lanes, which they subsequently rejected. Both sides agreed to mediation.
We are tentatively planning an SLEA rally for the next SLCSB meeting June 18th. Time place TBA as this meeting is typically held away from the district office. Check e-mail frequently and spread the word about the 18th. I know we disperse for summer, so we’ll need everyone who can attend to be there. We definitely need to show up in force!!! And of course, wear RED 😊
Stronger Together!!! James Tobler
PS. Our press release statement is copied below. I do want to clarify that strike talk at this point is premature (see Tribune article – link copied below). Such a decision would not be made without thorough SLEA member input and a membership vote.

For Immediate Release
Salt Lake Teachers Declare Impasse in Contract Negotiations
The Salt Lake Education Association (SLEA) today announced it has declared impasse in contract negotiations with the Salt Lake School District for the 2019-20 school year and will enter mediation according to Utah State Law.
SLEA is asking for mediation because of the school district’s failure to provide adequate resources to ensure the recruitment and retention of quality teachers in Salt Lake City School District.
The Salt Lake City School District Board of Education offered a new single-lane salary schedule that would have provided a starting teacher salary of $50,100, but would mean a loss of more than $125,000 in earnings over a 30-year career compared to the current step-based salary schedule. A counter-offer by SLEA to accept a 5-percent increase based on the 2018-19 salary schedule was rejected by the school district. The district also rejected proposals to cap class sizes and extend pay for parental leave. Teachers would receive a salary increase under the Board’s proposal for the current year, but most would face decreased lifetime earnings because of the single-lane salary schedule.
“We appreciate the efforts of the Salt Lake City School District in addressing the concerns of educators and seeking solutions to the ongoing crisis of teacher recruitment and retention,” said SLEA President James Tobler. “Fortunately, both teachers and district officials are focused on doing what’s best for the students we all serve. We remain hopeful we can work with the district to reach a favorable settlement.”
The SLEA negotiations team consists of three teachers who volunteer their time to represent the interests of educators, the SLEA president, who is also a teacher, and a local UEA representative.
