In the 2019 Legislative Session HB495 was passed creating a “Tax Restructuring and Equalization Task Force.” As part of its recommendation process, this task force has released a second draft of proposed tax reform changes with the goal of both cutting taxes and increasing tax revenue streams. Many of these recommendations could negatively affect public education and our members. Primarily, they want to alter how public education is funded by changing the Utah State Constitution which stipulates that income tax revenue fund public education. They also want to remove liquor tax proceeds from helping fund school nutrition programs. We need your voice in telling this task force that any changes to Utah public education funding must be increasing, sustainable, and guaranteed.
