[BBTC Ride_calendar] bicycle safety
On the advocacy front, the following is being passed around by local advocacy groups across the country. The idea is to get all states to adobt the "complete streets" policies making them safe for cyclists and pedestrians. Contact your representative today. Raleigh ACTION ALERT: IMPORTANT LONG-TERM MEASURE FOR BIKE SAFETY Please make a quick call to your Senators ASAP Dear Adventure Cycling Member, We don't write to you very often to ask you to call or e-mail your elected representatives -- but a great opportunity has presented itself and we need your help. It will only take a moment and could do wonders for bicycling over the next five years. We ask that you call or e-mail your Senators NOW and urge them to support Senator Tom Harkin's amendment to require states to create "complete streets" policies. These policies will give bicyclists and pedestrians a leg-up in how our State Departments of Transportation (DOT) plan for all users of our streets. The amendment, which will likely be proposed on Wednesday, May 11, will be budget-neutral (i.e. no new federal revenues needed) and holds the potential to dramatically improve transportation for all Americans. For Adventure Cyclists, this proposal will provide a great opportunity to work collaboratively with DOTs on our country's highways and other roads. It could also help us in establishing a federally-recognized National Bicycle Route Network that will help provide better, safer routes for bicycle travellers. Please call or e-mail your Senator by 5:00 PM EDT tomorrow (Tuesday, May 10). At this point, calls are preferable (more personal) but e-mails are fine. A list of contacts and e-mail addresses for your Senators can be found on the America Bikes website: http://www.americabikes.org/Transportation%20LAs.asp I've included a few more details below. If you would like to see the Senator's Complete Streets amendment, with an additional fact sheet, it is available at http://www.americabikes.org/Harkin%20bill.asp Thank you so much for supporting bicycling and bicycle travel. If you can help by supporting this amendment, we would greatly appreciate it. Best wishes, Jim Sayer - Executive Director Adventure Cycling Association Inspiring people of all ages to travel by bicycle.
