RE: [BBTC Ride_calendar] Bike helmets work
Thank you Kim, Yes helmets do work, and if I had not been wearing mine back in Oct. 1996, this response would never have occurred!! I will not bicycle nor ski without this vital piece of self preservation. I was crossing a 4 way stop intersection in semi-rural (plush) Sanata Barbara with designated bike lanes when looking to my right realized the auto coming into the intersection had not a clue to stop. I had no where to go, and she impacted me @ 25 mph, throwing me to the opposite corner of the intersection. My right shoulder (level 5 dislocation of collarbone) and thigh (massive hemotoma) contacted her vehicle, which catapulted me 45 degrees to the opposite corner of the intersection (for you engineers, how far was that? from mid lane in the NE quadrant of an intersection to pretty much the edge of the SE quadrant given luxury level So. Cal. roads with 6' marked bike lanes 150' ?). Anyway landed on my head, then left side with enough impact that my elbow caused 3 cracked ribs on my left side. Three surgery's and six month's physical therapy, I was back on that "horse", ONLY BECAUSE WEARING A HELMET SAVE LIVES! (MINE) It's a Brain Bucket...If you have a brain, care about it and fo r it...protect it! I'll get off the soapbox now Peter -------------- Original message -------------- From: "KIM HAGGIN" <bikerkim@msn.com> Bike helmets do work! I fell off my bike last year and landed on my head. Even though the side of my head was bleeding profusely, my head was just fine. By the way, I was wearing a Giro as well. I emailed the company to see what their replacement policy is. They gave me a 30% discount and I was happy to get another Giro since the first one saved my noggin. Just an FYI......
