Bonneville Shoreline Trail Recreation Impact Study
Dear Bonneville Bicycle Touring Club Member,
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism at the University of Utah is participating in a "recreation impact study" as a component of the broader Environmental Impact Statement being prepared by Bearwest Consultants for the Utah Museum of Natural History's proposed new building site located adjacent to and just south of Red Butte Gardens.
The parcel of land in question is bisected by and is adjacent to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail which is an important recreational resource for residents of the Salt Lake Valley and for bicyclists alike. The reason we are contacting you is that we are interested in conducting interviews of pertinent recreational stakeholder groups to gather qualitative data for the study. During the month of September, our Department collected surveys of recreationists along the segment of Shoreline Trail just south of Red Butte Gardens, and found bicyclists to be a significant user group.
Please help us in determining if you would consider yourself as being a stakeholder who is concerned with the issue, and if you would be available for an interview that will occur probably during the month of October.
Here are some examples of questions that might be asked during interviews:
Do you consider yourself to be a stakeholder in the Utah Museum of Natural Historys environmental impact statement that is being prepared as part of the planning for their proposed new building adjacent to Red Butte Gardens along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail?
Why are you interested in this trail segment, and how do you identify with it?
Do you feel any particular sense of place attachment to this segment of the BST, if so please explain why?
Are there any key concerns you have with a new UMNH being constructed adjacent to the BST?
If the building were constructed in this area, would you prefer to see the placement above or below the BST? For reference, the Red Butte Gardens main building is considered to be above the trail segment in question.
Assuming the project proceeds, are there any specific suggestions you would offer in regards to ways of mitigating for the concerns of bicyclists?
If the new building was to affect current trail alignments (upper / lower BST and connectors), do you have specific suggestions for alternate alignments? Please describe them.
If access between the upper and lower shoreline trail at the point just south of Red Butte Gardens was affected how do you think this impact could be mitigated?
Do you think there is a need for a designated trail head in this area? If so, where exactly would you put it? How many cars do you think it would need to accommodate? What type of features should it have?
If the overall recreational conditions in the area were improved with the addition of a new museum would you be more likely to buy in to the project?
Please respond to the email address below if you are interested in participating in an interview as we are seeking one or more individuals to represent your group:
