WHAT'S HAPPENING
Community Programs Across the Country Receive Funding In 2004, the LAF provided more than $1 million to 40 non-profit organizations across the country to establish or further develop community programs that help people living with cancer to live strong, build nationwide camaraderie between organizations and promote cancer survivorship education. Since its inception in 2001, the LAF Community Program has awarded more than $2 million in grants to various organizations. The LAF is now accepting applications for funding through the Community Program in 2005 at www.laf.org: http://ipost.com/rd/9z1zlhrtpoetae19iuljuikh05l6rle75v3dq9jvo4o.

LAF Accomplishes Goals on Capitol Hill The LAF had a successful year in 2004 and accomplished several important goals on Capitol Hill for 2005. In June, the Foundation held its first LIVESTRONG(TM) Day in Washington, D.C., where cancer survivors and LAF advocates visited members of Congress to distribute LIVESTRONG wristbands and to discuss survivorship issues.
Following LIVESTRONG Day, President George W. Bush signed the FY 2005 spending bill for federal health programs. The bill included $1.35 million in funding for LIVESTRONG, the LAF's educational resource, and LAF survivorship programs at the Nevada Cancer Institute, the University of Pennsylvania and the Rainbow Babies Survivorship Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The LAF has also funded a new germ cell tumor and tissue bank resource. The resource will make tumor and tissue samples available to researchers studying testicular cancer. LIVESTRONG(TM) SurvivorCare Program Expands The LIVESTRONG(TM) SurvivorCare (LSSC) program will expand its outreach efforts in 2005 by partnering with the Patient Advocate Foundation. This partnership will provide support services for practical concerns to cancer survivors. The Patient Advocate Foundation will act as a liaison between survivors and insurers, and employers and creditors in an effort to resolve insurance, job retention and debt crisis matters that relate to a cancer diagnosis. The LAF will have dedicated case managers to meet the specific practical needs of its constituents. This partnership is in direct response to the 27% of constituents that call or email the LSSC program with questions related to practical topics.
