The bike rodeo was selected as and project and organized to address the community need for bicycle safety education for our young people. In the past Utah Legislative session a bill was introduced to address the critical need in Utah to promote and educate for bicycle safety based in part on the following statistics. Children ages 5-14 are five times more likely to be injured in a bicycle related crash than older riders. Only 5% of child bicyclists wear helmets. Bicycle head injuries account for 65,000 emergency room cases and 7,700 hospital admissions each year. Bicycle head injuries also account for 70-80% of fatally injured bicyclists each year.
