To All: Friday, September 22nd, is world car-free day. On this day we had scheduled a "Mayor's bike to work day" to celebrate car-free day. Unfortunately Mayor Anderson has ver recently received an invitation to be a panelist on (former)President Clinton's Global Climate Initiative in New York City. I am sure man of you will be disappointed to miss this annual celebration of bicycling, but most disappointed is Mayor Anderson who truly enjoys seeing us on our bikes riding to work. We are a vivid example of is efforts to make our environment safer and cleaner. We may be losing a small party next Friday, but in the big picture we have a leader who had made visible strides to keep us safer, and more accepted as we ride to work, on errands or for the simple pleasures of riding our bikes. So let us congratulate Mayor Anderson for being picked for the panel , but look forward to our next bike ride with him next year. World Car-free day is still going to happen. So please, be car-free on Friday September 22nd. (for more on car-free day go to www.carbusters.org) If anyone wants to meet me at Liberty Park on Friday the 22nd at 7:30 AM, let me know. we can eat a bagel, drink our coffee or juice and then ride off to our respective jobs. [BBTC Ride_calendar] Redwood Road Construction

Hi All, If you received this e-mail then you received Stan Swallow's post about the Redwood Road project. I went to http://www.udot.utah.gov/sr-68south<http://www.udot.utah.gov/sr-68south> to give my comments (support for adding bike lanes to the project) and found that the deadline for comments is the 15th. We only received the post on the 13th. This corridor (at least in the Saratoga Springs area) should be near and dear to BBTC members hearts. With proper planning in the future this corridor could have bike lanes in every phase of expansion. This means having the ULCER circumnavigate the lake will be possible again and hopefully ensured in the future. Bike lanes from Camp Williams to Saratoga Springs would make Redwood Road safer to include in rides making more areas accessible for club rides. Fairfield, Cedar Fort that hardly anyone goes to anymore; and new places like Eagle Mountain could be included. I know it's short notice but please take a minute to voice your comments at the above site if at all possible. Add yourself to their mailing list so you can know about these things in a more timely manner in the future. There are something on the order of 500 members of BBTC. We could be a fairly loud voice if we all talk at the same time. UDOT will continue to take comments throughout the planning process (for other phases). If they here from us enough maybe they'll come to us when they want to know what cyclists really need in road construction. We're taxpaying, voting, citizens after all. A few weeks ago I attended a public scoping hearing at Saratoga Springs where UDOT presented some proposals for the S.R. 68 upgrade project (Redwood Rd. from Bangerter Hwy. to Pelican Point). Part of the proposal is to include dedicated bike lanes. UDOT is now gathering public input about these proposals. I gave them my feedback on the importance of including bike lanes and they encouraged me to have other cyclists give their input. Obviously, including the dedicated bike lanes is an increase in the cost of the project, so they may be better able to justify it if they have the backup of many individuals supporting the proposal. UDOT has a web site where you can leave your input with them online. (go to www.udot.utah.gov/sr-68south and click on Get Involved, right upper corner). Please take two minutes and leave your feedback supporting bike lanes. Here are some points to remember, (a) this area of Redwood Rd. is extremely dangerous, (b) this stretch of road is traditionally a prefered cycling venue (ULCER, Tour of Utah, etc.), (c) there has been several cyclist fatal accidents in this area, (d) dedicated bike lanes raise drivers' awareness of bikes on the road. I told people in UDOT that I would be sending this information to the Utah Velo Club as soon as their website was up and running. They were delighted and hopeful to hear from a lot of people. Hey BBTC! The weather forecast predicts perfect cycling this week! Lets Ride!! Although September brings a close to our riding calendar, it doesnt bring a close to our riding. The new season starts October 1 and there are plenty of riding days left before the weather turns and we start tuning and waxing our skis and planning playtime in the snow. For those who missed riding on Sunday - Tim Shea showed us that its possible to ride north through North Salt Lake without going up Redwood road on his Ultimate Ultra ride. A nice change and a great route. October is coming - and so is the Moab Century Tour , October 7 to be exact - HQ for the BBTC sign up sheet is the Canyonlands Campground, practically in downtown Moab and only a couple of blocks from the ride start. No pledges to raise - simply Pay the entry fee and ride. Don W.
