This should be done today to have impact and to make our roads safer: From: "Malcolm Campbell" <mcampbell(a)gmidgroup.com> Subject: UBC needs your help Friends, We need your help. The Legislature has been preoccupied with tax cut issues and has not shown much interest in the agendas of small organizations like the Utah Bicycle Coalition. So now that the tax issues seem to be worked out we are pushing to extend the $20K allocated last year to an additional $20-$40 K this year. Last year the money was earmarked for Utah Highway patrol and they have used it to develop a series of radio adds running on the Wasatch front and TV PSA's running on hotel networks in Moab. This effort will reach a limited audience and will only run for few weeks in the spring. Our objective is to have them run longer and statewide next year. The UBC is asking you to politely ask Senators Curt Bramble and Dave Thomas to earmark $20 to $40 K for UHP to promote safe driving and cycling. Sen. Bramble was the person who got the 3' law through the senate last year and allocated money to UHP for publicizing it. Sen. Thomas is the Senator who ordinarily allocates funds for the UHP. Points to use: 1. Thanks for passing the 3 ft law and $20 to publicize it last year. 2. The $20 k allocated to UHP last year has been well used and is very helpful. 3. The task of making the roads safer is ongoing. 4. Our goal is to make both cyclists and drivers safer users of the road. 5. Both cyclists and drivers need to learn to respect the rules of the road and each other. Below are the letters I sent to these Senators and you are free use them a sample. The Deseret Morning News Obituary Notices BBTC, Randy Sutherlands funeral will be held Thursday,March 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at the Murray Park Stake Center located at 619 West 5750 South. On Wednesday, March 1st from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary (4760 South State St.) there will be a viewing. One hour prior to funeral at the Stake Center there will also be a viewing. When I spoke with Randy's wife Sunday night she had commented on how in the past month or so Randy spent allot of time in his Yellow jersey that he was awarded for the BBTC high mileage award in 2004. It was warm and easy to get on and gave him pleasure to wear. Randy was a significant member of BBTC and we will miss him greatly. Sutherland Randy W. Sutherland "Live Strong" Our beloved father, husband, son, grandpa and friend, Randy Wayne Sutherland, 47, returned peacefully to our Heavenly Father's open arms on February 26, 2006. He passed away due to complications from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). He was the youngest child born to Ruth and Richard Sutherland on Sept. 14, 1958, in Salt Lake City, UT. He attended Olympus High School. He earned his Eagle Scout. He served an LDS mission in Dallas, Texas. He received his Bachelors Degree in Accounting from Park College. On Feb. 12, 1982, he married his loving wife, Dorothy Bullock, in the Jordan River Temple and was blessed with four wonderful children. He served proudly in the Air Force for eight years. He currently was employed at Alder's Sales Corp. as their Controller. He was an active member of the LDS church and served in many callings, which he loved. His passion the last few years was bicycling. He loved the outdoors and loved being with the Bonneville Bicycle Touring Club. In 2004, he rode over 6,000 miles on his bike. One year ago he surprised his family with an extreme home makeover with tremendous help and love from our wonderful community so that his family would be well taken care of in the future. Since the makeover Randy has enjoyed traveling from coast to coast with his family going to places such as Hawaii, New York, Niagara Falls, Nauvoo, San Francisco and Denver, making the most of each precious moment he had left. Randy is survived by his wife, Dorothy, children, Anne (Vance) Lee, Jacob, Kyle, Kaitlyn and grandson, Justin Lee, Ruth Sutherland, mother; Peg (Steve) Goff, Rick (Maureen) Sutherland, Pam Sutherland, brother and sisters and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Richard Sutherland, father. The family wishes to thank Dr. Mark Bromberg, Barbara Miano and Staff at the U of U ALS Clinic, Dr. Todd Eberhard and staff at Cottonwood Hospital and all those at the wonderful ALS Support Group. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Sutherland Children Trust Fund at any Wells Fargo Bank. If you haven't heard, this Saturday is the annual Bike Swap at the Utah State Fair Park (see attched link). BBTC will once again be represented with a table at the meet but we're looking for a few more volunteers to man the table. The hours of the meet are from 10:00 Am until 6:00 PM. Penny and Robin Perkins will be on hand to get us set up and Patty McDonald will be spelling them around noon or so. We need somebody to help us in the later hours. BBTC, After returning from the club ride down in Springville I just got word that our dear cycling friend Randy Sutherland passed away this afternoon in Cottonwood Hospital. He will be greatly missed by so many BBTC members. The last time I rode with Randy was on the same course that we did today and I was thinking about him and how much I enjoyed that ride with him. This is before I found out the news of his passing. He said that riding the east side of Utah lake was his favorite ride. I am grateful to have experienced this and many other rides with him. Randy's positive attitude was a great addition to many of our lives. It sounds like the funeral will be Thursday about 11:00. When we find out the details ...we will keep you informed. I know that there are allot of our club riders that care for Randy and his family and will want to be there. Penny

With the Festival only two weeks away it is time to get ready, and I don't mean by trying to get in shape. Get your bike ready. Why come to Moab and have a bad day's ride because of a mechanical? The number one problem we see ruining a day's ride is the condition of the bikes tires. If you have been inside riding a trainer for the winter there is a really good chance that your rear tire is starting to get thin and worn out. I recommend taking your bike to your local shop and getting a minor check up to make sure that your bike is ready for the spring. Have them check out the condition of your tires and see if they need replaced. Now is also a good chance to get new handlebar tape. If you are looking for extra comfort try some of the new handlebar tapes that have gel in them or come with gel inserts. Coming to the Skinny Tire Fest with a cleaned, tuned bike with new tires will only help you out. Bike repairs on route always take longer than in the shop. If you make it to Moab, stop by Poison Spider Bicycles at 497 N Main and visit our knowledgeable staff and take advantage of our tire and tube sale for the fest.
