Fwd: [Police] Little Buenos Aires concerts review
Well, I hate to be the one to sour the mood and take away from a great review, but I have to disagree with Leandro´s review. Your english is very good by the way. I had the great fortune to see this show in Buenos Aires as well, on the 2nd of Dec. My wife is from Buenos Aires, and I am the godfather of my sister-in-laws daughter and she is getting baptized this weekend, and of course my presence was a must. And what a coincidence, the Police are playing as well!!! Of course my wife knew and there was no need to say anything. She hadn´t gotten to see them with me in Vancouver or Denver, and she wanted the chance, and what better place than at the stadium of her favorite soccer team, Estadio River Platte.... She was here a week before I got down here,(I´m still here by the way) and she got some tickets for us through my sister-in-law. Well, I just wasn´t that blown away by them, not like I was in Vancouver (in spite of the fact that it was their first live performance together, but just the excitement of seeing them for the first time did it for me), and Denver (where they had gotten things a bit more together). I will say though, that they did have a much more cohesive sound and things sounded very smooth and everything gelled. Andy sounded much more confident on his guitar and his solos really did rock... Glad to see him pull out the Tele too. Don´t remember seeing it at the other shows. But all-in-all, I just didn´t feel the energy from the crowd that I felt in the US, and I think that sort of sapped the energy from their show a bit. Everybody was sitting almost the whole show, with the exception of the people on the floor in front of the stage- they were really into it. Hadn´t seen the little schtick that Andy did right before they did Next To You before. That was sort of cool to see Andy taking the center stage by himself, being the goofball he has always been. Like I said, I hate to be the one to put a sour note on somebody´s great review. A friend of my wife also went to the show, but on the 1st of Dec., also a life-long Police fan, and even had seen them when they came through Buenos Aires back in the 80´s. She was also not that impressed. Well, people have different opinions about the same shows. Doesn´t mean I´m not glad to have seen them again. Will still go to some more shows if I have the chance. Maybe it´s also the fact that they are playing the same set list and not changing it, with the exception of removing songs, ie. Spirits and Murder by Numbers.... I would love to hear Man In A Suitcase and Peanuts or Born in the 50s, or Canary In A Coalmine. Wish they would do Don´t Stand So like the album or more like they used to live. I really liked Truth Hits Everybody at this show, Next to You. Could have done without Wrapped Around Your Finger. Well, that´s my 2 cents worth anyways. Please understand this is not my native language. I'll do my best!!! I want to say that i'm still shocked and excited with the things that I lived on Saturday and Sunday nights. I'm 25 and started listening to The Police when I was 13, when I found a Greatest Hits CD that belonged to my sister (the one with the white background and the picture with the three of them wearing black glasses). Since that moment I became a fan and when I started to read things about the band I realized that I would never be able to see them alive. So last weekend I felt like all my dreams were becoming true. I admit I was a bit affraid that shows would not completely fill my expectations, but now I see that I couldn't be more wrong. Both shows were unbeliaveble amazing! The sound quality, the big screens, the audience, the schedule, Sting, Andy, Stewart! Everything was incredible. Even Beck seemed to sound well while we were waiting the main event!!! The setlist was the identical for both concerts: Message in a bottle Synchronicity II Walking on the Moon Voices Inside My Head / When The World Is Running Down Don't Stand So Close to Me Driven To Tears Truth Hits Everybody Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic Wrapped Around Your Finger De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da Invisible Sun Walking In Your Footsteps Can't Stand Losing You / Regatta de Blanc Roxanne King of Pain So Lonely Every Breath You Take Next To You I was surprised how they made room for Andy. He, with his red stratocaster, really rocked!!! He did 5 o 6 solos that were amazing!!! Sting reached almost all the high tones he wanted to reach. He made two mistakes with the bass that i could count but he played brillantly (with his left thumb pressing the fourth string, strange technique) Stew was absolutely great. Sometimes seemed as if the drums were part of his body. And of course he was the most beloved by the audience. A continuous ovation for him. The shows duration were of 1:45 hour. Both of them. That was a con. Everything was under a script. Even an acting that Andy an Stewart made before Next to you bis. Both days the same. Why, please tell me why, the didn't play Spirits in a Material World??? whi?? :( Anyway, I'm glad they rejoined, I'm glad they came down here, I'm glad they played so perfectly and I'm glad I spent the most beautiful days of my life (or at least in the top five) Leandro PD: links: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i419646tMvA ; http://www.tn.com.ar/mm.aspx?id=772755 ; http://www.rollingstonela.com/varios/Fotosymas/GaleriaImagenes_cs.asp?nota_i... PD2: I read in a local newspaper that Buenos Aires is going to be the main show in the DVD. As would I, but I think it was Stewart who admitted in an interview earlier this year, that they "had been advised" to stick to the hits. I'm sure it has something to do with selling tickets (meaning that the majority of people, the casual fans, want the hits). In the absence of any new music, it does make sense. I just saw Van Halen this past Saturday in Portland and they were operating much the same way. The one difference is that they limited the songs they played to those that they'd produced prior to Sammy Hagar taking over for David Lee Roth. Hence, they had a little room to add a few non-singles. If you count "Hole In My Life," "Truth Hits Everybody," and "Next To You" then the Police are doing this as well. You could even include "Driven To Tears," "Voices Inside My Head," and "When The World Is Running Down." as they were not exactly singles either [note: I'm not counting the remix singles that were released well after the Police had ceased arresting people ;) ]. The first show here in Buenos Aires was a bit better than the second one. I believe there were two main things that contributed to things going this way: 1) On Saturday the show was sold out and on Sunday there were too many seats empty (i'm almost sure that this was related to the very expensive price of the tickets) and a lot of free space on the back floor (they devided the field in two: VIP and back) This affect, of course, the result of the show. 2) In Argentina the crowd is kind of strange. There are two kind of audience: the one who wants to jump and go crazy and the one who wants to see the show seated and in peace. The people in the second type, buy a ticket with a seat and is very difficult to see them getting up. In fact, is really anoying for them people standing. An usual phrase is "Sit down. If you want to see the show standing, go to the field". Anyway, as you said before, it's normal to have different opinions and also it's very possible that i can't be objective. Is impossible. Are you enjoying your stay in our country? I hope you do. If you want to become a fan of a soccer team, don't even think about River or Boca or any club instead of Racing Club. The greatest soccer team in Argentina and in the whole world!!! :D (we're not in a great moment right now, but well... shit happens, we'll get better!! :D)
Leandro, Well, I thought that the stadium was a little empty on Sunday night. There were plenty of seats open and the floor was probably about half-full. I hated to bash the show, but it just seemed like there was no steam. I would really have like to have gone on Sat night, but i only arrived in Argentina on Saturday. Would have been a bit much to come into town and then go to a concert right away. I did also notice that people were very comfortable sitting down and showed no signs of standing, except for the few that were die-hard fans.... I am enjoying my stay as always. It´s never long enough though. My family is great and I always have a good time..... By the way, when I asked them who Racing Club was, they said, ¨Who?!!¨ Jajaja,... my wife is a HUGE River Platte fan and her brother and even BIGGER Boca fan. No chance I could like anybody else..... I would be laughed at to death!! Well, all in all, a Police show is a Police show, and I was just happy to get to see them in another country. Doesn´t happen often and I wouldn´t have gone to the trouble with any other band!! Well, I understand the logic behind that, sticking to the hits. But it seems to me that even Man In A Suitcase was a bigger hit then even Voices or Hole, as much as I love those songs.... I can never get enough of Voices, the whole thing is just awesome!! But, there is just something about MiaS, maybe cause I travel for a living. There´s a connection.... I wish I could have seen Van Halen too, always a big David Lee Roth-era Van Halen fan. Just wasn´t the same with Sammy. He did a good job, but just didn´t have that personality that Diamond Dave did. 8^) Mitch Darby <mitch@harashick.com> wrote: st1\:*{behavior:url(#default#ieooui) } Steve wrote: > I would love to hear Man In A Suitcase and Peanuts or Born in the 50s, or Canary In A Coalmine As would I, but I think it was Stewart who admitted in an interview earlier this year, that they Âhad been advised to stick to the hits. All three have had a place in past Police tours. To my knowledge, Man In A Suitcase only lasted the Zenyatta tour, while Voices went on to become the opening music (in re-recorded form) for both the Ghost and Synch. tours. Hole, of course, was played on the early tours and then brought back for the Synchronicity tour. BUT, I suspect the real reason they are in todays set list is because they were both a part of Stings Broken Music tour. And as we all know, its Stings table!

Like The Police, VH has just extended their tour as well (see van-halen.com or vhnd.com for dates). They also promise new music in the future. But Ive heard that promise before! I (like many others) agree with you about Sam & Dave. Dave was the best part of the show. Ive seen him solo once before and I have heard a few boots from both his solo tours and his Van Halen years, but he was better vocally at this show. Ed was Ed. Al was Al. And Wolfgang was adequate if unremarkable. It would have been better had Wolf played rhythm guitar and Michael been on bass (his rightful place). Mitch
Hola!! OK, I know it's late now but I've been away from home and I just checked my emails. I was at both Bs As shows and the one in Santiago (that's where I was). I think the people in Bs As were really into the show... I was at campo VIP both nights and all the people around me seemed to be having the best experience ever; but OK maybe it was just my experience... but I wouldn't change it for anything. The 3 of them seemed very happy and enjoying the show. About the songs... I was holding a banner at the shows asking for O my God or Miss Gradenko; I know it's almost impossible they change the setlist but you never know... ;) Cheers, Yo! ----- Original Message ----- From: Steve Langele To: Mitch Darby ; Mailing LIst Police Sent: Thursday, December 06, 2007 2:58 PM Subject: RE: [Police] Little Buenos Aires concerts review Well, I understand the logic behind that, sticking to the hits.
