In fact I think I'd agree with you agreeing with me... ten albums probably for me, too. I felt like the only person that *did* like Mercury Falling, but I was happy with that one (w/ 25 to Midnight on it). Christopher --- foxie <forfoxie@yahoo.com> wrote:
...I would agree with Chris on the "8 records being near perfect" assessment...in fact, I go even farther - I think his first 10 records (up to MERCURY FALLING) are near perfect. Also agreed that I would be just a jazzed to hear Sting's unreleased and b-sides as I would The Police...

Most songwriters have a shorter career than Sting, that's for sure, and the bulk of writing seems to occur when they're in their 20s. (Still, I do remember Sting saying after SOUL CAGES that he had "finally run out of Last Exit songs" to cannibalize and now he was in trouble...)
That said, I would rate "his" first eight released albums (Police + 3 solo) as near perfect. I love everything he wrote for those records. It's only after that when I start to say "hmmm" every once in a while, and don't love *every* song. But I love most. It's a pretty amazing catalog. I want his solo boxed set, too, with all the demos and lost b-sides. :-)

On my way home last night I started pondering the writing method. I really like that new Fergilicious song and it got me thinking. You think with all the music in the world, we'd run out of new, catchy songs to listen to, but somehow, the wheels keep rolling. Thank goodness.
Was also cleaning up my ipod lists (rating them w/stars) and was awestruck by the percentage of Sting's songs that got 5 stars from me. I can see why one would have writers block, that's a boatload of great songs! Other artists that got 5 stars for a majority of their songs were Squeeze, Talking Heads, Joe Sumner, and Gavin DeGraw. My ratings, of course!

Angeline,
I can't remember a specific source for the writer's block quote but it was *right* after he had started his BROKEN MUSIC tour. (I remember going "aha! that explains it".) It was literally just a quote box in a magazine or something. There was no context given, just that writing SACRED LOVE had been very hard and he hadn't been able to write song one since then, and that writing the book had also been very hard for him. The lute album and the Police reunion would also both make sense in that context... he's stalling. :-)Â
In the great 86/87 writer's block period, he of course saved the rainforests, did a musical on Broadway and attempted the *last* Police reunion ,so I actually still feel like something's possible now. (Maybe a police reunion on broadway to save the rainforests...? Andy can tapdance, can't he?)

PS--I agree with you that it will be a bitter pill to swallow if MESSAGE IN A BOX comes out with five new tracks. I hope they will at least dig in the vaults for various gems Stewart has mentioned over the years, things like the "reggae" demo of Every Breath You Take. I want stuff that's never been released!Â
