When I saw on Stingus.net that Sting would be playing a show for American Express card members on February 19th in Newark, 30 minutes from my house, I thought it was the perfect birthday present for my wife Andrea whose birthday is the next day. This show was a little harder to get into than just buying tickets on ticketmaster with your Amex card though. It turns out that the show was "by invitation only" for American Express Centurion card members. I don't know too many Sting fans with an American Express black card... I was able to get two great seats, 8th row center aisle, from Craiglist. I totally surprised Andrea - she didn't know who we were seeing until we walked into the venue. She said she never thought I could surprise her with a Sting show! But since this wasn't advertized at all, she knew nothing about it. And neither did I until Holly's post two days ago. I was expecting a Symphonicity show and was extremely pleasantly surprised to learn that Vinnie and David Sancious were back. Ok, so a little bit of a rant here. This was a private show for people with a LOT of money who are not necessarily Sting fans but got complimentary tickets to an exclusive Sting show with complimentary food and drinks. And what does Sting do? He reunites what is in his words from Saturday, his "FAVORITE BAND." And he gives the audience an eclectic setlist on top of that. And aside from recognizing the hits, 99% of the audience has no real appreciation for the coolness factor of Vinnie and David being there or gems like Seven Days being dusted off. Why cater to THIS audience? There were isolated pockets of fans in the audience who were out of their seats for most of the show, but the rest of the audience just sat politely... Anyway, this was a great ROCK show, the likes of which I was starting to doubt we'd ever see from Sting after the lute album, the winter album, and the symphony album. Some songs were given new life, like a bluesy arrangement of Set Them Free, and Hounds of Winter which really shined with Jo Lawry on vocals. The show was heavy on Police songs and Ten Summoner's Tales and Mercury Falling. There was not a single song from The Soul Cages, Brand New Day or Sacred Love. We set out from our hotel in Valparaiso at 9:30, thinking we’d arrive around 10, see the first act, then Sting would come on around midnight. (Everything happens later in South America.) When we reached the grounds and began passing through the three ticket checkpoints (things are very orderly in Chile), a lot of people were running past us. Everyone was wearing pants or jeans, bufandas (scarves), and even some with winter coats. (It’s summer here but the evenings are getting cool, especially by the sea.) Seeing these bundled up Chilenos made me worry that I was going to freeze tonight, waiting hours to see Sting. As we approached the seating area the sound of “Englishman in new York” reached our ears. My husband said to me, “Is that Sting?” I listened closely…maybe it was a recording? When do concerts ever start at the exact time stated on the ticket? Especially in Chile? No, it was our man! We hurried up the stairway and a security woman helped us find our seats. I can’t believe I was late to see Sting! This never happened to me before—how many times have I arrived so early at the concert venue and then waited? Anyway, we were in the middle of it. Sting was singing and the orchestra was playing away. We had to work our way down our row, which was bleacher-style seats. The other concert goers were not pleased with us squeezing past them. I felt badly. I’d be annoyed, too, in their shoes. Finally we found some space and sat down. Sting looked great, as always, in spite of the crew cut he’s sporting these days. He wore very fitted black jeans-style pants and a shiny black shirt. A long-sleeved shirt so I couldn’t see his gorgeous arms. The set list went something like this: Englishman in New York Roxanne This Cowboy Song Russians When we Dance Fields of Gold They Dance Alone She’s Too Good For Me King of Pain Every Breath You Take Next to You Message in a Bottle Desert Rose Fragile On stage with him was Dominic Miller, a female backup singer, and I regret that I cannot say for sure who the other musicians were. The orchestra was Chileno. He had that table with the blue-green-white design on it. Sting went through about four songs without speaking to the audience. When he finally addressed us he said Qué tal (How are you?), and that was it. This was my first time seeing Sting in a non-English-speaking country. Perhaps he didn’t want to say a few things in Spanish. (Remember the EP Nada Como El Sol?) But, he could have used English. His music is in English and all these people turned out to see him perform. Anyway, I love Chile and am so impressed with this country and its people that I expected him to comment on the incredible rescue of the miners, or the earthquake—the first anniversary of which is today, two days after his show. Instead, this show was all about communicating with his fans through music, which he did fantastically. He seemed in very good spirits, his voice sounded great. He danced a little. The audience loved him. It was a very neat experience to be in what for me was an international audience (I’m from the US). I got to see first-hand how great his worldwide appeal is. Is it ever overwhelming for a performer to go to so many different countries and have so many fans? I was impressed for Sting! I’ve loved him and The Police forever, I get it that he’s world famous, but being in one of his international audiences was special. He performed “They Dance Alone,” a very meaningful song for Chile, which brought roars of applause from the audience. This is the song from Nothing Like The Sun about the mothers of the people who were murdered or disappeared during the dictatorship. It’s also called “Gueca Solo”, which refers to Chile’s national dance, the cueca or gueca, which is always danced with a partner, not alone. It’s a traditional dance, but not obsolete; every Chileno knows how to dance the cueca. Dominic spoke the Spanish verse. That was one of the highlights of the show for me. “Russians” sounded great with the orchestra, though I don’t really like that song. “Next To You” sounded great and rocked hard. “Message in a Bottle” was terrific. Everyone knew the words to that and was singing along. Some members of the audience had messages for Sting on posters. “Welcome to Chile”, “Your music is my inspiration”, “Now I can die happy”, “I love Sting”, all were in English. A few people held yellow Amnistía Internacional posters proclaiming No más violencia contra las mujeres (No more violence against women). There were two encores. Before each one two Festival hosts came out and praised him and his performance, and thanked him for playing at the Festival. He was presented with an award before the first encore. Then, before the second encore he got three awards. The audience was chanting de oro “give gold.” This took me a while to figure out. What do they want? He already did ‘Fields of Gold’…. Then Sting was given an award with a gold seagull in flight, a symbol of Viña. Apparently this trophy is given according to the audience’s wishes. Chile gave Sting gold.

I agree with the earlier report. What a fantastic rocking show. I had good seats as well but decided they werent good enough and just walked up front and since it was a laid back AMex show it was no breeze for me to sit in 4th row middle seats. Fantastic. I took some great shots - Sting is wearing a buzz cut these days. The band was great and I thought the set list was fantastic. Free beer and munchies as well was a nice treat. Man if there are any more of these shows that you can go to I would wholly recommend it! I think from a marketing point of view you know how they say you can saturate a market by playing an area too often and I'll bet these kind of shows avoid that as no one knows there is a show, excepting a very select few. Hi Bruce! The fan club did have a thread about these shows on the message boards and did have a contest on the website to give away 10 tickets to each of the shows. I did not enter since I could not travel to either of the locations, but maybe he will do some more of these in my neck of the woods... I do not think that they sent out an email announcement about the contest....so I think that the only way that members would know about it would be if they logged on to the website. Bye! Can someone make a list of Sting shows for Amex, whenever they got discovered? You know, same old 'collector' fever... A friend of ours who travels all over the country setting up and/or breaking down offices recently reached a milestone with her American Express card, 25,000 miles or something, so they sent her a pair of complimentary concert tickets. As she was scheduled to be in Boston on the night of the concert, she offered the tickets to me and my husband. So, like any normal people would do, we moved all his patients to another day and booked it to Cleveland! The concert was at a fabulous restored theatre in the downtown theater district that seats about 1,000. The lobby goes on forever, and on this night, American Express had set up a buffet and open bar -- all free! -- about the length of a football field! We had no idea there was anything like this till we got to the theater! Many of the other concertgoers didn't know either, and it was an incredible spead and a huge surprise! As we walked in, someone snapped our picture, and then someone else came up and posed us for a picture. She said she would send it to our computer, so I gave her my friend's e-mail address! The concert was, of course, Sting. He was joined onstage by Jo Lawry, from the Symphonicities tour, Dominic Miller, of course, and (wait for it....) David Sancious on keyboards and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums!!!!!! They played for 2 solid hours, including the THREE encores, and they sounded incredible!! The set included Hounds of Winter (a very pleasant surprise), Synchronicity II, When the World is Running Down, Shape of My Heart, King of Pain, Every Little Thing, Seven Days (another pleasant surprise!), Englishman in New York, When We Dance, I Hung My Head, I'm So Happy, and I'll probably remember more later. David had an incredible solo and so did Dominic, and I can't say enough about the musicianship and the voice of our hero -- he was just great! Hit all the notes and then some! I know I'm prejudiced because I'm an unabashed fan, but I have to say that the concert was probably the best of the 5 (blush) I've seen! [Just remembered another one -- Desert Rose. Oh, and Next to You, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Set Them Free, and of course, Roxanne.] Anyway, it was an amazing experience, well worth a trip to Cleveland. Even the weather cooperated -- it's Feb 17th, and it was 60 degrees in Cleveland today!! It was also supposed to rain -- not a drop! I'm a very happy camper. Have a great weekend, everyone! Holly

Hi everybody, good to see this list is still alive and kicking whenever something comes to surface. Usually when Sting does something for American Express, is 'it's own thing', and it does not appear on any board (such as Sting.com, or ThePolice.com) nor any public announcement is done. I've heard about this 'policy' from the previous Amex concert at his home in Tuscany back in November last year, it has nothing to do with his usual mgmt; they surely know about it, but there is no reason to 'make some noise' around it, as it's only an AMEX biz. I guess that if you are an amex aficionado, maybe you can have the right contacts to find some news about it, calling an amex marketing office; they surely know more than anybody else. Thanks for the write up on the Sting concert in Cleveland. I am going to an Amex Show Sat night in Newark and wonder if it will be similar. Its weird how you have no idea going in what these will be like and there is no publicity etc. Also the Newark show is at a NHL hockey arena so its a pretty big place. I wonder if they have the top level curtained off or something. Will be interesting to see - now more excited about it after your email. David L.
