sorry that i have keep those curious souls waiting. allow me to being by saying that recent DVD discussions were about 2 different DVD projects - the one that G told us about (call it the "Stewart DVD" and the one that i have been referring to. here's the info on "mine": i have a friend that works on DVD releases for universal music. i met him during my stay at sony music. in late december 2003, he contacted me, advising that he was just assigned a new project, one on the police - to make a proposal and, if the universal powers at be liked it, he could run with it, work on it to see if it would be cleared for release. knowing what a lunatic i am about the police, he asked me for my help - specifically, what would i, as a police fan, like to see on this DVD? so i told him to put something out with as much unreleased and/or hardly seen material as he could get. we went back and forth on what to get for weeks. here's a sample of some of the stuff he set after: Shea Stadium footage (it go so that he was trying to get clearance to put the entire concert on the DVD) Footage from last concert (Australia, 3/84) Footage from BPI Awards in November 1985 (the police got a Lifetime Achievement Award at this ceremony - I didn't know who (if anyone) from the band went but, if they did, it would have been the 1st time they appeared together since aforementioned Australia gig) Footage from recording of SYNCHRONICITY in Montserrat Footage from recording of tracks for EBYT: THE SINGLES i saw this DVD as two-fold: a documentary with a LET IT BE slant - assuming footage from the respective recording sessions could be had, you would see the band's final implosion. so, armed with ideas, my friend set off. universal liked it. next up was miles and, after some "negotiations", he was fine with it. but all along, i KNEW that there was something - no, more like someone - that could screw it all up. that sting would have final say over any police-related project. a few weeks ago, this project was presented to sting's management for the 1st time. again, at this point, all that the project entailed was ideas - nothing was set in stone, nothing HAD to be on the project. not every request for something had to be granted. it was just a mixed bag of things. well, to say that the sting camp was not thrilled with the project would be an understatement. it languished there. then, yesterday, my friend sent me an e-mail, and i quote: "Forgot to tell you dude, found out this morning sting has blocked the new dvd. He says no and that's that!" was i surprised? no. was i made? not really. my personal feeling is that, for the past 20 years, sting has done all he could to downplay the police for the betterment and furtherance of his solo career. there will be no reunion and no projects like this or like the Stewart DVD or like 'Derangements" (remember THAT?!!!) sting is far too busy - he has albums to make, performances with the backstreet boys and twista to do. so he will just keep busy, drown us all in himself and hope that we will, by process of police starvation, forget about the police and shift our feelings for the band to him. i think it was Brando that said "all you owe your audience is a good performance". but i say "who says you have to say in the audience?" there was a time when i held sting's solo material just as close to my heart as police material. then came BND and, well, you all know that story. Concert report Sting at the Hallenstadion, Zuerich, Switzerland on May 22nd and 23rd 2004. The setlist: Intro : A Thousand Years (playback, no band) Send Your Love Inside Forget About The Future Dead Man's Rope Synchronicity II Whenever I say Your Name I Was Brought To My Senses This War Fragile Fields Of Gold Stolen Car Sacred Love Walking On The Moon Englishman in NY Roxanne Never Coming Home Encore 1 Desert Rose If I Ever Lose My Faith Every Breath You Take Encore 2 A Thousand Years Review by Simon C As you can see on the setlist, it?s exactly the same set as RAH and if you read those reviews on www.stingus.net, it?s pretty much the same, so I?m only mentioning the differences I noticed. The ?Hallenstadion? holds a capacity of nearly 12?000 people, the tickets for Sunday were going out very good, so Saturday was scheduled hoping to get 2 sold out shows. As far as i?ve seen, Saturday had about 9?000 people and Sunday was pretty much ?full house?. I needed to go to both show?s because Saturday was my birthday, and what better to have Sting singing at your birthday, isn?t it ? Unfortunately the book signing who was expected to take place on Saturday afternoon was cancelled because Sting obviously needed to take care of himself and decided to do only concerts and no other promotional stuff. Sadly, because there where a few people outside the shop waiting in the rain (including birthday-kid Simon). I?m not going to tell you a word about the supporting act, nellie mckay, I wish the people in Paris a good Tea time while she will perform ! The best thing was she only played 20 respectively 25 minutes. The show started with a fantastic instrumental intro of ?a thousand years?, before the band opened the 2 hour set with a great ?dance? version of ?send your love? and immediately everybody was standing up and dancing to the beat. ?Inside? was next a gave the first break, people wanted to dance instead of hearing a ballad. It was cool to hear this first 4 songs from the new record, i really think they sound better live than the studio versions. Synchronicity II??this is the song only diehard fans know, you can recognise Police - Fans by singing this song ! I felt like dancing and jumping, I really love this song, and Keith Carlock played it very Copelandesque ! It was a surprise and a good move to put ?fragile? in the middle of the set. ?walking on the moon? was played in the known ?jazzy? way with Brian, and ?englishman in new york? made people dance again ! Roxanne ?Mount Everest of the set? was next, a great and long version with lyrics from ?King of Pain?, ?bed?s too big without you? and ?spirits in the material world?, Dominic even played the intro of ?spirits in the material world? very shortly. All in all : Great show, Sting and the band where in a good mood, Sunday was definitely better than Saturday, there was much more energy in the band maybe due to Sting?s health. Good rearrengements of the songs, as i said - better than on the record. A few People where interviewed by radio stations, everybody was happy and saying it was a good show. So did the press too ! After having seen Sting for the 20th and 21st time, he still got it, live better than ever ! One last word on Merchandising : the obligate T-Shirt?s, official Sting CD?s, but also Dominic?s ?Shapes? (only signed copies available !) and the German Talking Book of ?Broken Music? (3 CD?s, about 220 min.)

Just heard (unofficially I have to add) that the postponed Birmingham NEC gig from May 12th has been rescheduled for 23rd November..... I have a feeling I won't be able to go, as my wife will just about be ready to pop our second child... :(((((( Damn you Sting, damn you.... ;-) J.

Hmmm, a not so nice nameless e-mail was sent to me in reply. With some questions I would like to answer. Why I joned? Stings music once ment the world to me, even helped me in difficult times. The dream of, Nothing like, The Soul cages, remember those? Why I'm critical? Because his nowadays music is not up to the level we might aspect from Sting. The level he set! Besides, I bought every single thing Sting released. I feel that I have a right to be critical. Why I'm still on the list, I still love his albums, up to BND. And while he was working on his last studio album, Brainwashed, he was also putting together the Dark Horse Years boxed set. It just happened that he succumbed to brain cancer while working on these last two projects. The site I am running http://www.stewartcopeland.it is more or less something like that, or at least Stewart sees it that way; I planned a meet & greet with fans in Rome, he's completely available with stuff to be upload on the site (music and video), he takes care about autographs to be given away to fans (I always give him a pile of stuff to be signed for fans) and he reads very carefully all the messages I upload on the fans area; now I have around 150 fans from all over the world; they simply receives e-mail with Stewart updates, like the ones I sent to you.
