Channel surfing for only a moment, I stumbled across an interview with Ian McKellen (of X-Men fame look here for more http://us.imdb.com/Name?McKellen,+Ian) on 60 minutes. A very well known and accomplished actor. Discussing his life long admiration for Sir Lawrence Oliver (worked with him briefly) he told the story of how he was at an auction where a briefcase monogrammed with the legendary actor's initials L.O. was up for bid. He wanted it quite badly but he said he was up against the singer Sting and his wife Trudie Styler. HE continued stating he had to give up bidding, as Sting and Trudie's resources were considerably more. Here is the nice part. Some weeks had passed and the day after Ian lost an award, he was home but not necessarily feeling sorry for himself. A package arrived, and there, for him was the briefcase in question, with additional initials I.M. monogrammed on the case. A note accompanied the case stating it was intended for his 60th birthday (but I guess they sent it early. Sting my man, well done. I didnt think you had it in you. Trudie, no doubt this happened with you influence. Nicely done folks. A story he shared with interviewer Charlie Rose.

Yes, this is only further gilding on an established opinion, but I have been listening a lot to Regatta de Blanc and Zenyatta Mondatta lately and paying special attention to Stewart's playing on those records. He is a giant among drummers. Love, Courtney

The Avalanches sample The Police

While looking for some semi-live music on the internet, I discovered that during their session at KCRW, the Avalanches sampled (or is borrowed the better word?) from Can't Stand Losing You and Message in a Bottle. The interview/performance can be found by: 1) going to http://www.kcrw.com/cgi-bin/db/kcrw.pl?tmplt_type=spec&tmplt_name=find_brow… 2) In the dropdown box, select Morning Becomes Eclectic and click on Go Find It! 3) In the Choose a Show dropdown, select "The Avalanches - Friday, November 30, 2001" and click on Go Find It! 4) Finally, select the little G2 logo and RealPlayer will launch. The Police-ish content is somewhere around the 25th minute. For those of you who haven't heard of the Avalanches, they're a DJ duo from Australia known for their 900 sample heavy debut - "Since I Left You" (entertaining album, BTW, but no Police on it.) And for those of you who haven't heard Morning Becomes Eclectic, it's an outstanding program with so many good artists and good music! Manners (slightly off-topic)

Just wanted to share an opinion with the list. I've noticed that most of the people on this that are not from the States are rather polite with their posts, and more than helpful when in need of Sting related items. I'm assuming that manners are taught across the pond. Here in the States, (list members excluded) whenever you deal with someone you've never met, a number of people here tend to be a horse's ass first and polite second. Manners are almost an afterthought in the U.S., and politeness is often mistaken for a weakness and some people will try to take advantage of your kindness. What am I getting at? I guess I'm just expressing my gratitude for some of the folks on the list who care enough to wish me well when they close their posts. Your kind gesture is appreciated.
