I get this list as a digest and got two digests that consisted of two e-mails repeated over and over. That's not a thread, it's maddening, MADDENING, I TELL YOU! The html version was two or three screens in length. Craziness. Did this not happen to non-digest readers? Does anyone host that dublab show I heard mentioned recently? I would love to hear that. Or are those available in an archives. I must remember to check. Off to work! Alan Institute for Psychic Reform Change your Mind www.psychicreform.com Lookit! We have a domain name!!!

"psy trance" personally, i am unfamiliar with this term. that is, only folks on message groups use it -- no one i know in real life has ever said "yeah i like psy-trance" or "you gotta hear this great new psy-trance disc". i am guessing that it is short for "psychedelic trance". correct? also, what are some of the bands in this genre, so that i can get an idea of what it is like... thanks for educating this lowly Orb fan.... I have also known psy(chedelic) trance to be known as Goa trance if that helps!!! My mate has loads of stuff on minidisk but I can't quite remember any names at the moment. Not much help really, sorry. I'll just get back to my teatime. Billy P J Kane wrote:

Yes, psy trance is short for psychedelic trance which was previously known as goa trance. It was called goa trance because a lot of the Dj's spinning it were often livin' it up in Goa, India having mad psychedelically enhanced beach trance parties. When it became popular (94-96), there were a lot of melodies in the music, but over the years the melodic psychedelic sound has unfortunately grown into the boring minimal techno sound. So a lot of the "pioneers" are now making crap. There are a lot of psy trance djs (I'm one of them!), but DJ Goa Gil was the "original" psy trance dj... He still plays professionally and internationally today; usually for 14-20 hours at a time! (he plays the whole party) His website: http://www.goagil.com/ Psy trance FAQ: http://www.deliria.org/faq.html Some big names in psy trance: Hallucinogen Shpongle X-Dream Astral Projection Logic Bomb Etnica Plieadians Some big psy trance labels: Flying Rhino T.I.P. World Hom Mega Spiral Trax M.D.M.A. Phantasm Psychic Deli Any other questions just ask!! :) Over and out.... ... .. . . _jason_ <redeye_jedi@mac.com> ( ( (( Psychotropic )) ) ) <(*)> ( ( (( acting on the mind )) ) )

schpongle and eat static are the only two i can stand. but after five years of burningman i have little resistance to trance and house for more than 10 minutes at a time. and yes psychedelic trance is correct. and yes its very hard to define. Usually a good bit "trippier" than trance. On Thu, 25 Jul 2002, P J Kane wrote:

Yeah, Eat Static are a good (in every sense) example of what i think of when someone says psy(...) trance. I'd also recommend Hallucinogen, Man With No Name, the Liberator DJs (Chris, Aaron, Julian), lab4... and I think the Pope dabbles in that area a bit too. I can't think of many others - there aren't many acts that stand out from the, er, trance-like drone. That list's probably a bit dated - i've not really kept up since around the time of megadog's 1000th "last night ever"
and yes psychedelic trance is correct.
and yes its very hard to define.
What music genre isn't? surely only NME writers know what they mean? (I love that vocal sample at the start of Outer Space btw, "I like being the head of the New Musical Express" :)
Usually a good bit "trippier" than trance.
And harder, I'd say if pressed to describe it. "non-psychedilic" trance sounds to me like bog-standard house music with slightly fewer vocals and maybe less chart appeal, so what gets called psy. trance is what i think of as plain old trance. but maybe that's because i cut my clubbing teeth on goa and the sort of music i listed above. starting as a metal fan i might have been mellowed by "the dance scene" but still wanted damn hard music to dance to >:) How closely do meaningless musical genres share their names in different countries? I hear a huge range of music being called electronica or techno in the States, and I don't know what I'd call it but I'm sure people here would break it down into a million sub-genres. Are there different names elsewhere? or the same names for different things? that's sort of a rhetorical question, this thread's just got me thinking a bit... well, those are my rambling thoughts on psy trance jon np: keep it unreal - mr scruff -- "Everybody understands Mickey Mouse. Few understand Herman Hesse. Only a handful understood Albert Einstein. And nobody understood Emperor Norton." - Slogan of NORTON CABAL - S.F.

that seems to be a British thing. we Americans tend to not have as many "sub-genres", musically speaking, as Brits. i wonder why that is? that's what i thought
i wonder why that is?
once again, i'd like to blame the NME (i'm using the NME as a blanket term for all music papers, magazines etc as in general i think they're crap - and mixmag and muzik and those magazines seem to be responsible for inventing the names for most of the "[stupid adjective of the week] house" genres) -- "Malt does more than Milton can To justify God's ways to man." - Housman, A. E. (1859 - 1936)
we Americans tend to not have as many "sub-genres", musically speaking, as Brits. i wonder why that is? The same sub-genres are here in America. Most American's just don't have a clue. What do you expect. Radio doesn't play it, unless you have a NPR station in your area that has a show or two featuring the music (like KCRW here in LA). The masses don't see it on MTV, VH-1, they only see rave "busts" on the news where "techno" is played. It's still relatively underground here, except for the bigger cities where it's taken off in the past couple of years. Maybe America is awakening somewhat (speaking of the masses). My 2 cents. FVLL
