Re: FW: RE: [Orb] OT: How to tell mp3 kbps? (going slightly OT)
"I guess you just gotta know the right people..." -Gavin Miller 2005-07-14 19:112005-07-14Â 23:11UTC i wish i knew the right people! on that - are there high quality orb gigs out there? been thru soulseek and back and have acquired a ton of good stuff from some very friendly listers but have to imagine there are real high quality live recordings that are much better than you average soulseek download. on that (and here is where i go off topic...) why don't more bands release live material? i don't necessarily mean in the form of a formal cd like live '93, but with the digital age and all why don't bands/labels post live gigs for purchase and download. heck i would actually buy something off itunes if there were gigs posted there! now i don't know a thing about the music industry (or making music for that matter..but i can crunch a mean spreadsheet!) but i would have to think there would be a market for this stuff. have heard phish did something like this - let fans dl gigs straight from ttheir site..but not sure if that is true...not a phish fan. also not a pearl jam fan but always loved the concept of their releasing a ton of their live shows to the masses. if the orb did that i'd be first in line to hand over my cash for each and every gig - particularly know some money would be going back to the band! one final question from the ignorant mass of one - is it illegal to dl concerts? has been an ongoing discussion between me and my mates - have always logically thought since the material was never officially realeased it is not a violation of copywirte laws. is this dilusional on my part? just some thoughts that have been running thru my head for the last 12 months. steve --- bla blazo <m111j@???> wrote:
I wish there were more orb shows in a lossless format - I'm not a fan of mp3s at all.

On whether or not it's illegal to download concerts, it depends on what the band's taping policy is. Bands that allow their shows to be taped and traded usually allow shows to be downloaded. (Their are a few that allow taping but don't allow downloading, Allman Brothers is one that comes to mind, but the vast majority that allow taping are cool with downloading). The Orb are a band that allows taping to some degree and allows us to trade shows. Phish is definitely a pioneer in getting their live music out to the fans, at their site you can download every show they've played in the last two years in addition to a select few archival releases for $9.95 in mp3 or $12.95 for SHN. Since they netted over a million dollars after the first year of the site's operation one can only imagine that other bands will follow suit. Of course not all band's have as rabid a fanbase as they do. The coolest thing about their taping policy is that you can still trade audience recordings (the ones they offer are SBDs) of the exact same shows that they sell from their site. Sign me up for www.liveorb.com, I'll gladly pay $12.95 for lossless shows! Jason
I'll second that Jason, in fact i have a live show from the Manc Academy and i enjoy that more than some of the albums, its got most of uforb and some other bits on it 90mins of bliss. Worth a few squids of anyones money i think. Steve JASON HICKS wrote:

Primus also allows buying/downling their live shows. Don't have the details, but have listened to my friends CDs of their live show that was the exact concert they were at (the one in orlando, fl a couple years ago). - xenlab
