<< A MAGIC ORB MOMENT: >> okay, fair enough. in 1993 i had a crappy job in a modem factory in Alpharetta, north of Atlanta. it wasn't really too strenuous - i pulled parts from inventory for people to put together. i had lots of time for playing with the computer, and i had complete access to Usenet. i have been a diehard Cocteau Twins fan since about 87. searching for related music led me to "ambient", which i had never heard of living in The South. and that led me to The Orb. i read a ton of posts about their "new album" _U.F.Orb_, and i eventually tracked down a copy. it took me a while to get that CD, but i finally found it in the "dance" section of the Towere Records here. i remember i got it one chilly rainy day in March, 1994. the rain turned to snow as i sat in my apartment and listened. serious snow in fact. which is wierd enough in Georgia, but even wierder in mid-March. so, there you go: i remember sitting in the dark smoking a cigarette and listening to "Towers of Dub" as the snow came down..... been hooked ever since...... On a similar southern note: It is late 1991 and I just met a girl who was into something called dance or rave music or whatever. I was listening to Nirvana and thought I had found something "cool" and was beginning to realize that there was music beyond The Cure and Metallica (strange mix but it worked for me). After experiencing acid and clubbing for the first time I was very interested in this new music that was neither The Cure nor Metallica. So I head down to the local Record Bar in my home town (tiny little ass place in eastern NC where all they play is Country/Top40/Classic Rock/Beach Music) so finding something dancey (sp?) was a long shot and I knew it. When I reached Record Bar I looked for the gayest/most GQ salesmen there figuring he may know something if stereotypes hold true. I asked for hard dance or rave (no knowing what I was asking for) and he said that heard of a new cd or band called the orb and said it might be what I was looking fro. He hadn't listened so he couldn't tell me either way - he was just looking to make a sale. He took me to the dance section and I picked up THE ORB'S ADVENTURES BEYOND THE ULTRAWORLD. The packaging seemed nice enough and the tracks sounded kinda cool. And I figured what the fuck. If I don't like it, they had a reasonable exchange/refund policy. Dropped the cd in my little portable cd player rigged up to the tape deck, cranked up the volume, and was hugely disappointed right form the beginning. This was neither hard nor dancey. Supper pissed. Very super pissed. After deciding to copy this POS and get a refund (I needed something for my wasted time and money), I drove home to do just that. Feeling somewhat better at my decision to exact revenge on some asshole in record store who just wanted to make a sale I just let the cd play. By the time I arrived home I realized that this music hit a nerve very deep within and was somehow familiar and comforting. I just sat in my driveway staring into space and listening. My opinion had changed a complete 180 and the ideas of what could be done musically had changed dramatically. Kinda like going someplace where you know all the good parking spots are going to be gone anyway and yet you happen to find an excellent spot without trying. Yeah, I knew I was home musically. Never looked back. IT was 1991 and I was in Dallas Texas with the SFA marching Band. I played Drums. I was really into the KLF and I picked up a copy of Chill out that weekend at Bills records and tapes. I read the Credits and saw Patterson's name in the credits. So I decided to check them out. I was able to get the Adventures beyond the Ultraworld when I returned to Nacogdoches Texas where my school was locate and went to Hastings and picked it up. I was blown away with it. MY fav was AHEGPBTRFCU!!!!!! I was mesmerized by the track!!! Been hooked ever since! This is my story. I don't really know if this counts as a "Magic Moment," but here goes. The first time I heard the Orb my hippie neighbor was playing Live 93 and was raving about how this is the best music to get high to.....At that point in my life I was listening to alot of prog rock and offshoots of prog rock, so I was down with things like Can, Frip & Eno, Floyd, etc., and I played guitar in a band that was trying to do more experimental work. When I heard Live 93, I remember thinking how fat the bass was compared to most of the music I listen to, and how cleverly they used samples in their mix. Wow, a "techno" band that did not offend me. It still wasn't enough to get my to buy the album. About a year later, my roommate picked up Orbvs Terrarvm, so we decided to have a "sesh" and listen to it. I won't go into detail about my love for Orbvs, but listening to Oxbow Lakes changed me and my musical direction forever. I had never heard a song that sounded like it swallowed itself. I also liked the idea of an almost cheesy, new age piano line being crushed by sounds that were toally foreign to me at the time. So, to make a long story short, I now write "electronic" music and I have gone way beyond what I thought I would ever do with music. Then when I found FFWD and found the Orb was playing with Fripp, it all seemed to make sense. Maybe one day I will be able to produce an Orb remix. I've got White River Jvnction in my sights. "listen to the radio....." And just so it seems like I'm not brown-nosing Orbsters past n' present: Fuck all of you!!! Yer Pal, Gel-Sol www.gel-sol.com

If you need that sample again, by the way, it's off a Tape Beatles album that you can grab off their website. If you hadn't fucked us all i'd be more inclined to tell you what their website is but you can jolly well find it yourself. Hmph. --krl
Thanks, I've checked out the tape beatles before....I actually use the sample that says "The Law of Repetition..." that was on the peel sessions version of Valley.... I knew the fuck you line was gonna get me in trouble....yet I still said it.... Yer Pal, Gel-Sol www.gel-sol.com "My mistake was going for the cheese." - Police Chief Clancy Wiggum
