I've got a laserdisc from Last Tango in Paris hanging on my wall. It's pretty much the same technology as the CD but I think there's an analogue element to the disc. I dunno. The university in my home town had a large collection of the discs and we could check out the player for free. The picture and overall quality was better than VHS, the only problem being that the discs were 2 sided so you had to stop at some point to flip it. They're beautiful to look at. _________________________________ www.psychicreform.com Change your mind. _________________________________ Things are more like they are now than they ever were before. --Zippy the Pinhead _________________________________
I still have two laserdisc players both with auto side a/b play. I have a collection of a little over 2100 laserdisc which I still occasionally watch although the rare ones not available on DVD I have mainly been burning to my DVD-r. For most of the years the disc were available the sound was analogue followed by the digital AC-3 format and then by DTS. They were way superior to VHS and even the very original batch of DVDs though DVD technology has greatly surpassed them now. Pretty much the only videophile option prior to DVD. They were also much more expensive usually a minimum of $39.99 (US), $49.99 average and like $80 - $125 & up for collector's editions like the Criterion version of "Pulp Fiction", "Trainspotting", etc. Deluxe version Disney animated features were all $100 - $200. Out of print movies were astronomical ($1,000 & up for "Yellow Submarine", I paid $250 for a copy of "Betty Blue") Have to say I am glad collecting DVDs is much cheaper. I am up to 1700 on those.
